Výběr správného stanoviště je pro úspěch naprosto klíčový – nezapomeňte, že tymián má rád horká a suchá místa na plném slunci, kde se mu daří nejlépe. Dobře poroste na písčitých a štěrkových půdách, které bez problémů propouštějí vodu dál od kořenů. Těžká, jílovitá a trvale přemokřená zemina mu naopak vůbec nesvědčí. Při skupinové výsadbě pečlivě dodržujte spon zhruba 25 centimetrů, což odpovídá asi šestnácti rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Dostatečný prostor mezi sazenicemi zajistí nezbytnou cirkulaci vzduchu a výrazně podpoří tvorbu zdravých a hustých, dvacet až třicet centimetrů vysokých polštářů.
Samotná péče o tuto voňavou trvalku je neuvěřitelně snadná a hravě ji zvládnou i úplní začátečníci, kteří se zahradničením teprve začínají. Jakmile rostlina na novém místě dobře zakoření, nevyžaduje téměř žádnou dodatečnou zálivku a výborně snáší i delší období letního sucha. Přihnojování průmyslovými hnojivy není nutné a vlastně ani žádoucí. V příliš výživné a na dusík bohaté půdě totiž rostlina ztrácí svůj typický kompaktní tvar i aroma, vytahuje se za světlem a následně mnohem hůře přezimuje. Obrovskou výhodou pro každého pěstitele je skutečnost, že mateřídouška přirozeně netrpí na žádné škůdce ani choroby. Pěstování se tedy obejde zcela bez starostí a bez nutnosti používat jakoukoliv chemii. Během června a července vás navíc mateřídouška potěší bohatou záplavou drobných růžových květů, které na zahradu zaručeně přilákají včely, čmeláky a další cenné opylovače.
Pro dlouhodobé udržení hezkého bochánkovitého tvaru a celkové vitality doporučujeme celou rostlinu bezprostředně po odkvětu lehce sestřihnout. Tímto šetrným zpětným řezem podpoříte růst nových a svěže zelených lístků, které následně můžete využít ve své kuchyni k dochucení letních nápojů nebo oblíbených pokrmů. Co se týče chladnějších měsíců, její mrazuvzdornost dosahuje až vynikajících osmnácti stupňů pod nulou. Musíte ale pamatovat na to, že vadit může přílišné zimní vlhko, které je mnohem nebezpečnější než samotný mráz. Proto je naprosto zásadní, aby byla okolní půda velmi dobře propustná a srážková voda v ní během zimy nikdy nestála. Pokud máte na zahradě spíše těžší půdu, určitě vytvořte při výsadbě na dně jamky silnější drenážní vrstvu z drobnějšího štěrku.
Tato všestranná bylinka není odkázána pouze na volnou půdu a hodí se dobře pro pěstování v nádobách nebo prostorných truhlících. Při výsadbě do květináče na balkon či terasu nezapomeňte na dostatečnou vrstvu drenáže na samotném dně a vždy použijte spíše chudší substrát důkladně smíchaný s čistým pískem. Každá pěstební nádoba musí mít na dně odtokový otvor, aby přebytečná voda mohla ihned zmizet. V květináči bude vaše mateřídouška logicky vyžadovat o něco častější zálivku než ve volné půdě na záhonu, ale vždy raději počkejte, až substrát mezi jednotlivým zaléváním zcela proschne. Na zimu je velmi vhodné celou nádobu obalit jutou, bublinkovou fólií, nebo ji přesunout na chráněné kryté místo těsně k domu, aby její kořeny v omezeném prostoru zbytečně nepromrzly.
