The Oriental poppy originates from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on rocky slopes and dry meadows. It blooms with large bowl-shaped flowers on tall stems. Like all poppies, for use in bouquets, we harvest them as soon as the buds show color and "crack." Additionally, we briefly sear the stem ends with a flame (for about 20 seconds) and immediately place them in cold water. They will then last in a vase for 4 days. The strikingly hairy and large leaves die back shortly after flowering, and the plant must rest until spring to gather strength. Some leaves sprout again in late summer. Therefore, it is advisable to plant other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and can draw attention during the poppy's dormant period. Coral Reef is a variety with salmon-pink flowers and black spots at the base of the petals.

Pěstování španělské máty ze sazenice je vysloveně radostná záležitost, kterou hravě zvládnou i naprostí zahradničtí začátečníci. Tuto bylinku doporučujeme sázet do hlinité a humózní půdy, která přirozeně drží tolik potřebnou vlhkost. Nejlépe se jí daří na polostinném stanovišti, ale pokud jí zajistíte dostatek vody, bez problémů snese i plné slunce. Protože má silné tendence rozšiřovat se pomocí podzemních výhonů do okolí, je velmi praktické při výsadbě zakopat kolem rostliny plastový pruh jako kořenovou bariéru. Sazenice umisťujte ve sponu přibližně čtyřicet centimetrů od sebe. Díky tomu vytvoří souvislý porost, ale zároveň si nebudou vzájemně konkurovat.
Základem běžné péče je štědrá zálivka. Máta zkrátka miluje vodu a v suché zemi její svěže zelené listy rychle vadnou. Nejlepším způsobem údržby je pak samotná sklizeň. Pravidelné odřezávání natí pro přípravu vašich oblíbených nápojů rostlinu stimuluje k tomu, aby vyháněla nové postranní výhony a tvořila znatelně hustší trsy. Pokud ji necháte v létě vykvét, pokryje se fialovými kvítky, které jsou doslova magnetem pro včely. Jakmile květy začnou odkvétat, doporučujeme rostlinu zhruba o třetinu zkrátit. Tímto zpětným řezem jí dodáte novou energii a do podzimu se ještě krásně olistí.
Pokud jde o škůdce a choroby, máte před sebou mimořádně odolného parťáka. Rostlina netrpí žádnými chorobami, což pěstování neuvěřitelně usnadňuje. Jediným nezvaným hostem na listech může být občas mandelinka mátová. Její larvy nebo dospělce snadno zpozorujete a odstraníte dříve, než stihnou napáchat větší škody. A jak je to s přezimováním? Naprosto bez problémů. Španělská máta je plně mrazuvzdorná až do minus osmadvaceti stupňů. Na podzim její nadzemní část přirozeně odumře a uschne, tyto suché stonky můžete na jaře jednoduše ostříhat těsně nad zemí a rostlina znovu spolehlivě obrazí.
Velmi oblíbené je také pěstování této trvalky v nádobách. Zde je několik praktických tipů pro pěstování na balkonech a terasách:
- Zvolte správnou nádobu: Vyberte velký a hluboký truhlík nebo květináč, aby měly kořeny prostor a půda tak rychle nevysychala.
- Kvalitní zemina: Použijte humózní substrát, který dobře saje vodu, a nezapomeňte na mírné přihnojování organickým hnojivem během léta.
- Kontrola zálivky: V letních měsících kontrolujte vlhkost půdy každý den. Rostliny v květináči spotřebují zásoby vody mnohem rychleji než ty na záhoně.
- Zimování: I v nádobě máta bez potíží přezimuje venku. Jen se ujistěte, že dno nestojí v misce plné vody, aby kořeny přes zimu neshnily.
