Tymián obecný German Winter miluje plné slunce a doslova si užívá horká a suchá stanoviště, kde může naplno rozvinout svou vůni. Nejlépe se mu bude dařit v dobře propustné, spíše chudší písčité nebo štěrkovité půdě. Při výsadbě do záhonu vždy pečlivě dodržujte doporučený spon zhruba 25 centimetrů. Tento rozestup je důležitý pro to, aby měly rostliny dostatek prostoru pro svůj zdravý růst a mohl mezi nimi neustále volně proudit vzduch. Jelikož jde o silně suchomilnou bylinku, vydatnější zálivku vyžaduje pouze těsně po výsadbě, než dostatečně zakoření. Později si bez nejmenších problémů poradí i s delším obdobím letního sucha. Jakékoliv přihnojování není vůbec potřeba, protože v příliš výživné půdě by rostlina paradoxně ztrácela své typické intenzivní aroma a slábla by.
Tento vzrůstnější kultivar se výborně hodí i pro pěstování v nádobách a okrasných truhlících na balkonech či slunných terasách. Při výsadbě do květináče je absolutně klíčové zajistit perfektní drenáž, aby voda mohla po zálivce ihned odtéct. Na dno nádoby proto vždy nasypejte dostatečnou vrstvu keramzitu nebo drobných kamínků, aby u kořenového balu nikdy nestála voda. Tymián je totiž na jakékoliv přemokření extrémně citlivý. Během června a července vás rostlina potěší bohatou záplavou drobných růžových květů, které na vaši zahradu spolehlivě přilákají včely, čmeláky a motýly z celého širokého okolí. Ihned po odkvětu doporučujeme provést hlubší řez, případně celou rostlinu radikálněji seřízněte brzy na jaře. Tímto jednoduchým krokem výrazně podpoříte její celkovou vitalitu, zajistíte, že starší výhony nebudou odspodu dřevnatět, a tymián si udrží krásně hustý, kompaktní tvar s maximální výškou kolem 30 až 40 centimetrů.
Samotné pěstování s přehledem zvládne i úplný začátečník, protože tato aromatická trvalka vyniká skvělým zdravím, netrpí na žádné houbové choroby a obloukem se jí vyhýbají i běžní zahradní škůdci. Co se týče mrazuvzdornosti, oblíbená odrůda German Winter je v našich podmínkách plně spolehlivá a bezpečně odolává mrazům až do -23 °C. Nemusíte se tedy vůbec bát jejího vymrznutí, ale dejte si velký pozor na nadměrnou zimní vlhkost, která je pro tymián mnohem nebezpečnější. Pokud máte na zahradě těžší nebo mírně jílovitou půdu, která přirozeně drží vodu, je velmi vhodné k rostlině před zimou přidat trochu písku nebo drobného štěrku pro odlehčení. U sazenic pěstovaných v nádobách pak úplně stačí květináč na zimu přesunout někam pod stříšku, kam přímo neprší, čímž tymián bezpečně ochráníte před rizikem uhnití kořenů a zajistíte mu klidné přezimování.

Mateřídouška Coccineus je drobná, ale nepřehlédnutelná trvalka, která do zahrady vnese nádhernou vůni a záplavu barev. Ve volné přírodě roste na slunných a suchých stráních, skalách a písčitých místech, proto i u vás na zahradě ocení podobné podmínky. Nejlépe se jí daří na plném slunci v dobře propustné a chudší písčité půdě. Je to naprosto nenáročná rostlina, kterou bez obav zvládnou i začátečníci. Nevyžaduje téměř žádnou zálivku, netrpí na choroby ani škůdce a bez problémů odolává i silným mrazům až do minus osmadvaceti stupňů. Od června do srpna se kultivar Coccineus halí do nápadných karmínově růžových květů, které intenzivně voní. Jde o obrovské lákadlo pro včely, čmeláky a motýly, kterým poskytuje bohatou pastvu. Skvěle se hodí do skalek, suchých zídek, koryt nebo jako voňavá obruba slunných záhonů a chodníčků. Obdržíte od nás vzrostlou sazenici v květináči, kterou stačí jen přesadit rovnou na vybrané místo. Květy a aromatické lístky této mateřídoušky jsou navíc jedlé. Výborně poslouží v kuchyni při dochucování letních pokrmů, přípravě bylinkových čajů nebo jako jedlá dekorace na talíři. Ačkoli to pro svou malou výšku není typická rostlina k řezu do velkých váz, drobné voňavé snítky můžete přidat do malých letních kytiček nebo je usušit, protože si i po zaschnutí dlouho uchovávají své nezaměnitelné aroma.
