The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. Nepeta racemosa naturally grows on dry meadows and rocky, stony slopes from the Caucasus to Central Asia. It has aromatic grey-green leaves and forms a tufted semi-spherical bush. Pro úspěšné pěstování této voňavé sazenice je klíčový výběr správného stanoviště. Mateřídouška Rose vyloženě miluje horká a suchá místa na plném slunci. Nejlépe se jí daří v dobře propustné, spíše chudší a písčité půdě, kde může vytvořit krásné stálezelené koberce. Jelikož vám dorazí již krásně vzrostlá sazenice, můžete ji po uplynutí jarních mrazíků rovnou přesadit na trvalé místo do záhonu. Při výsadbě dodržujte spon zhruba dvacet pět centimetrů, což odpovídá šestnácti rostlinám na metr čtvereční. Tento rozestup zajistí dostatečnou cirkulaci vzduchu, díky které rostlina po zapojení vytvoří hustý polštář o výšce deset až dvacet centimetrů, aniž by si jednotlivé větvičky vzájemně překážely.
Tato trvalka je doslova splněným snem pro každého začátečníka, protože nevyžaduje téměř žádnou péči. Po zakořenění si hravě poradí i s delšími obdobími sucha, takže zálivka by měla být spíše mírná a nárazová. Zcela se vyhněte přemokření, které by mohlo vést k uhnívání kořenů. Hnojení není vůbec nutné, mateřídoušce zcela vyhovují na živiny chudé půdy. Během června a července vás potěší záplavou drobných bílých a růžových květů, které na zahradu přilákají včely a další užitečné opylovače. Abyste podpořili vitalitu rostliny a udrželi její pěkný kompaktní tvar, doporučujeme po odkvětu provést mírný zpětný řez, tedy zastřižení vrchních částí výhonů. Obrovskou výhodou je, že tato bylinka netrpí na žádné choroby a vyhýbají se jí i všichni běžní škůdci.
Mateřídouška se výborně hodí i pro pěstování v nádobách a truhlících na prosluněných balkonech nebo terasách. Při výsadbě do květináče nezapomeňte na dno umístit silnou drenážní vrstvu z kamínků nebo keramzitu a použijte lehký substrát smíchaný s pískem. Rostlina je vysoce mrazuvzdorná a ve volné půdě bez problémů zvládne teploty až do minus osmnácti stupňů. Jediné, co jí v zimních měsících může opravdu ublížit, je přílišné zimní vlhko a těžká, nepropustná půda. V nádobách je proto vhodné chránit kořeny před promrznutím obalením květináče a jeho umístěním na místo chráněné před nadměrným deštěm a sněhem.

Mateřídouška Coccineus je drobná, ale nepřehlédnutelná trvalka, která do zahrady vnese nádhernou vůni a záplavu barev. Ve volné přírodě roste na slunných a suchých stráních, skalách a písčitých místech, proto i u vás na zahradě ocení podobné podmínky. Nejlépe se jí daří na plném slunci v dobře propustné a chudší písčité půdě. Je to naprosto nenáročná rostlina, kterou bez obav zvládnou i začátečníci.
