The original species Salvia greggii originates from the dry and rocky slopes on the border of Texas and Mexico, giving it a natural love for the sun and well-drained soil. This cultivar grows compactly and from May to November tirelessly blooms with a multitude of tiny but striking flowers that resemble small painted lips. The entire plant smells intensely of herbs and blackcurrant when touched, attracting not only human admirers but also bees and bumblebees. In our conditions, it is frost-resistant down to about -12 °C, so we recommend growing it rather as a portable plant in containers on the terrace or balcony, which you can store in a cool, bright room for the winter. If you decide to plant it in a flowerbed, choose the warmest, most protected spot by a south-facing wall and carefully cover it with conifer branches for the winter. The flowers are edible and perfectly garnish summer salads or desserts.

The 'Nachtvlinder' variety, whose name translates as night moth, will enchant you with velvety flowers in a deep shade of plum purple. Its huge advantage is the incredibly long flowering period, which starts in May and often ends only with the arrival of stronger frosts in November. The entire plant is strongly aromatic and releases a pleasant spicy scent when touched. Because the original botanical species Salvia greggii comes from semi-desert and steppe regions, this cultivar also requires full sun and excellently drained, sandy soil, where it is not at risk of waterlogging. Cultivation
Pěstování šalvěje Lipstick začíná výběrem správného místa, protože tato sazenice potřebuje ke svému zdravému růstu především plné slunce a teplo. Stín jí nesvědčí – ve stínu by rostlina vytahovala výhony, méně kvetla a ztrácela svůj kompaktní tvar. Pokud ji plánujete vysadit do záhonu, zvolte chráněné místo u jižní zdi domu, která akumuluje teplo. Půda by měla být lehká, hlinitopísčitá nebo kamenitá. Její největší nepřítel je zimní vlhko, proto je perfektní drenáž nutností. Pokud sázíte více kusů, dodržujte spon 4 až 6 rostlin na metr čtvereční, což odpovídá vzdálenosti zhruba 50 cm. Tím zajistíte, že se rostliny nebudou tísnit a krásně vyniknou jejich dvojbarevné květy.
Velmi oblíbené a praktické je pěstování této šalvěje jako přenosné rostliny v truhlících či ozdobných květináčích.V nádobě dbejte na to, aby voda v podmisce nikdy nestála. Během vegetační sezóny je zálivka nutná jen tehdy, když je vrchní vrstva půdy suchá. Co se týče výživy, šalvěj je skromná – příliš mnoho dusíku by vedlo k bujnému růstu listů na úkor květů, proto hnojte jen střídmě. Květy jsou jedlé a skvěle ozdobí letní dezerty, takže se při hnojení raději vyhněte chemickým přípravkům, pokud plánujete květy konzumovat.
Údržba během roku spočívá v podpoře kvetení a přípravě na zimu. Jakmile rostlina začne odkvétat, nebojte se vršky výhonů mírně sestřihnout; podpoříte tím tvorbu nových poupat a prodloužíte kvetení až do prvních mrazíků. Na konci sezóny rostlinu nestříhejte příliš hluboko. Vzhledem k mrazuvzdornosti pouze do -12 °C je zimování venku rizikové. Ideální je rostlinu v nádobě před příchodem silnějších mrazů přenést do světlé chodby, zimní zahrady nebo garáže, kde nemrzne. Pokud zariskujete a necháte ji venku (pouze v nejteplejších regionech), je nutná silná vrstva suchého mulče a zakrytí chvojím. Na jaře pak proveďte hlubší zpětný řez, kterým rostlinu omladíte a nastartujete pro novou sezónu.

Its homeland is the semi-desert regions of North America, so it loves sun, heat, and a drier, well-drained substrate. It grows as a low, densely branched subshrub that is easy to shape and maintain. Although cultivation is undemanding and suitable even for beginners, it is necessary to keep its limited frost hardiness in mind. You just need to transplant this grown seedling straight into the flower bed, where it will reliably take root. It does not need support, easily withstands severe frosts, and is avoided by common diseases and pests, making it ideal for beginner growers. During June and July, it will reward you with aromatic flowers with unusually narrow and drooping petals in light purple and pink tones.
