Herbaceous garden peonies are long-lived perennials, but they require patience from the gardener. They take several years to grow into their full beauty, and blooming in the very first year after planting is more of an exception than the rule. For successful growth, they need the right conditions besides time, so we recommend studying our growing instructions.
Most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and common peonies, which were a traditional part of monastery gardens. Today, we like to combine them with perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs, but we must always give them enough space. Potted seedlings can be planted continuously from spring to autumn.

The original species often grows near streams and in moister meadows, so it will easily settle in our gardens in sun or partial shade, where well-drained, loamy, and slightly humous soil will suit it best. You will receive a rooted seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant into the flowerbed. Avens forms nice basal clumps of green leaves, which over time function as an excellent ground cover. Its growth is reliable and its care is downright undemanding, because the plant is not bothered by pests or diseases and withstands frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees. It stands out best when you plant it in smaller groups about thirty centimeters apart. From May to July, richly branched stems bearing semi-double flowers with gently ruffled petals appear above the foliage. The Mai Tai cultivar, which was bred in the USA in 2005, is characterized by its amazing color variability. It blooms in peach tones with a pink tint and gradually transitions into more muted pastel, salmon, and apricot shades. Blooming avens is a huge attraction for insects, especially for butterflies. We cut the stems for a vase when roughly a quarter to half of the flowers on the stem are open. They will stay beautiful in water for approximately seven days and add lightness and movement to an arrangement. However, its flowers are not suitable for drying. Although it is more of a short-lived perennial, it will bring you a lot of joy in the flowerbed with its rich flowers and undemanding nature.

It originally comes from the harsher conditions of the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on sunny rocky slopes and dry meadows. Because of this, it is exceptionally resilient, easily handling frosts down to minus forty degrees, and can do without complex care. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to a sunny location with well-drained loamy soil. The cultivar Royal Wedding will reward you in May and June with huge bowl-shaped flowers with pure white petals, which hide a distinct dark burgundy spot in their center. Moreover, these enchanting flowers reliably attract pollinators from far and wide. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back soon after flowering. The plant takes a break over the warmest summer to gather strength, and a smaller portion of the leaves often sprouts again only at the end of summer. Therefore, it is ideal to plant the poppy in the flower bed in close proximity to other perennials that sprout slightly later and naturally fill the empty space left by the resting poppy. It avoids diseases and needs no support, reaching a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. Just watch out for field voles, which might develop a taste for its fleshy roots. Otherwise, it is a long-lived plant that even a complete beginner can handle without worries. Given that the plant is poisonous, it is naturally not intended for consumption. The giant white flowers are also a great attraction for lovers of cut flowers, although they require a little trick. Similar to other poppies, the stems need to be harvested exactly at the moment when the buds begin to color and slightly crack. Right after cutting, we sear the ends of the stems with a flame for about twenty seconds to prevent sap leakage, and then we put them into cold water. Thanks to this procedure, they will stay beautiful for about four days in a vase and add amazing lightness to bouquets. Although these delicate flowers are not suitable for drying, they simply have no competition in fresh spring bouquets.

You will also enjoy the blooming avens at home. It is excellently suited for cutting into summer bouquets. We recommend cutting the stems when a quarter to half of the flowers on the branch are already open. They will then last about a week in a vase and gently liven up any arrangement. Salvia gregii
Salvia Nachtvlinder
Sage 'Nachtvlinder' is a true jewel among portable container plants, which will win you over with its unusual color and endurance. The original species *Salvia greggii* comes from the sunny and dry semi-desert regions of Texas and Mexico, where it grows on rocky and poor soils. Thanks to this, it is very undemanding regarding watering here as well and loves full sun. In our conditions, we most often grow it as a portable plant in pots on terraces or balconies, because its frost resistance reaches only -12 °C. OBECNÉ INFO
Kořeny pivoněk jsou živý materiál a proto je u nás skladujeme za specifických podmínek — kořenům musíme zajistit dostatečnou vlhkost, aby nedošlo k nadměrnému vyschnutí. Při skladování ve vlhku se ale na povrchu může objevit lehká povrchová plíseň; jedná se o kosmetický jev, který nemá vliv na následný růst. Kořeny balíme těsně před expedicí, aby byl čas jejich skladování v uzavřeném obalu co nejkratší.
VÝSADBA
S výsadbou pivoněk tedy neotálejte, aby jejich kořeny při skladování příliš nevyschly, jak už jsme psali, skladování je náročnější. Při výsadbě je třeba dbát na správnou hloubku výsadby a rostliny takzvaně „neutopit“, protože pak by nekvetly. Sázíme tak, aby po zalití pupeny výhonů mírně vyčnívaly špičkami nad povrch substrátu. Nejspodnější pupeny by měly být maximálně 2-3 centimetry pod povrchem. Výsadbová jáma by měla být dvakrát širší i hlubší než kořen pivoňky. Počítejte se sesednutím půdy po zalití. Pokud sázíte až pozdě na podzim, můžete nové rostliny před zimou zakrýt klestím.
STANOVIŠTĚ
Pivoňky kvetou nejlépe na slunném místě. Jsou však docela přizpůsobivé a může se jim dařit i v polostinných polohách, ovšem k bohatému kvetení potřebují minimálně 6 hodin slunečního svitu. Všechny pivoňky potřebují kolem sebe dostatek místa, nemají rády konkurenci keřů nebo živých plotů. Pro pivoňku byste si měli rezervovat plochu o velikosti jednoho čtverečního metru, kde jim nebudou konkurovat ani ostatní bujně rostoucí trvalky.
PŮDNÍ PODMÍNKY
Pivoňky potřebují propustnou, hlinitou a na živiny bohatou zahradní půdu, která dobře zadržuje přiměřenou vlhkost. Přemokření v příliš těžké půdě nesnáší.
ZÁLIVKA
Nově zasazené pivoňky potřebují zálivku zejména během prvního jara v období sucha. Vzrostlé pivoňky už budou odolnější a zálivka jim přijde vhod jen v případě hodně suchého jara a začátku léta. Po odkvětu už pak s letním suchem nemívají potíže.
HNOJENÍ
Pivoňky potřebují dostatek živin, vhodné je organické hnojivo bohaté na draslík na jaře. Naopak pozor na přílišné množství dusíku. Rostliny by pak byly náchylnější k houbovým chorobám. Na podzim můžete kolem rostliny rozprostřít centimetr tenkou vrstvu vyzrálého kompostu.

OŠETŘOVÁNÍ A PÉČE
V prvních letech po výsadbě odstraňujeme postranní poupata, aby rostliny zesílily. Koncem podzimu můžete odstranit odumřelé listy. Počítejte s oporou pro rostliny, potřebují ji všechny bylinné pivoňky. Pozor na jarní mrazíky, zvlášť pokud následují po mírné zimě. Narašené květní pupeny mohou snášet teploty klesající k -3°C, při nižších teplotách už odumírají. Pro tento případ chráníme pivoňky netkanou textilií.

Dobře vyberte stanoviště, pivoňky mají raději nerušený růst bez přesazování. To je možné u starších rostlin, které při tom rozdělíme, tak aby každá část měla tři až sedm pupenů. Nejvhodnější je období od září do října.
