Paeonia

Peony Duchesse de Nemours

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and for you to see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony in the very first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. Besides time, it needs the right conditions to flower. Check out our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars originate from Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today, we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them plenty of space in the flowerbed. Duchesse de Nemours is one of the oldest peonies, bred as early as 1856. Thanks to its brilliant white color and medium-sized flowers, which combine perfectly with other flowers, it belongs among the most popular wedding peonies. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn. Show full description

Peony Sarah Bernhardt, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

Peonies are valued in gardens for their large and imposing flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow into their full beauty and for you to see abundant blooming. Therefore, a blooming peony in the very first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. For blooming, it needs the right conditions in addition to time. Study our growing instructions. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest cultivated garden plants and most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and common peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today, we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. But we always give them plenty of space in the flowerbed. Peony Sarah Bernhardt was bred in 1906 and remains one of the most popular peonies on the flower market. The pink color of its flowers is compared to the color of peach blossoms. It is a late-blooming variety and its flowers are double and fragrant. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn.

Lavender Rosea, Loukykvět

Lavandula angustifolia

Lavenders are a must for every sunny herb garden. We classify them as sub-shrubs, and they are valuable for gardens due to their winter habit. Woodland Sage Caradonna, Loukykvět

Salvia nemorosa

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.

Foxglove Hanabee White, Loukykvět

Digitalis purpurea

Native to Central Europe, originating from clearings, damp meadows, and bright forest edges. Usually a biennial or short-lived perennial. In the autumn of the first year, the plant forms a basal rosette of leaves; flowering stems grow from these in the spring. Further development depends on the chosen location. In some places, it survives for another season; elsewhere, we must rely on self-seeding or plant new plants. All parts of the foxglove are poisonous. It lasts 6 to 8 days in a vase. A cultivar from the award-winning Hanabi series. Apart from its ability to bloom in the first year after sowing, its great advantage is its rich branching, creating literally a firework of flowers. The Japanese word 'hanabi' means firework. The connection to the English term for a bee reminds us of the importance of richly flowering perennials for pollinators.

Delphinium Magic Fountains Deep Rose (White Bee), Loukykvět

Delphinium elatum

Larkspurs are a classic and at the same time a dominant feature among bedding perennials. We often see them in the company of roses and peonies. To stand out well, they need to be given enough space and not forgotten regarding fertilization. We can enjoy their beauty in beds, bouquets, and even try drying; the flowers retain their deep color well. They last 7 days in a vase; they are sensitive to ethylene released from ripening fruit.

A verbena species originally from South America. In our country, it is often used as an annual, but in mild winters it can overwinter and reproduce by self-seeding. Bleeding Heart, Loukykvět

Dicentra spectabilis

The original home of bleeding hearts is Korea and China, where they grow in light deciduous forests. They are classic garden perennials. They will look perfect in nostalgically styled flower beds; the white variant fits well even into naturalistic woodland gardens. They are popular for their heart-shaped flowers hanging on horizontal or arching stems. These weaken and die back some time after flowering; all the plant's energy then concentrates in the roots, and at that moment, we can cut the above-ground part back completely. For the rest of the year, we won't even know the bleeding heart is in the garden. It will remind us of its charm again in the spring. Perfect vase life, at least 7 days. Harvest when the first 3–4 flowers open on the stem. The basic species has pink-white flowers. In spring, the sprouting shoots have a pink tinge.

Feather grass Pony Tails, Loukykvět

Stipa tenuissima

Feather grass flowers capture attention in beds and bouquets with their lightness and delicacy. All feather grasses love full sun and dry, stony, well-drained soil. To look most natural in beds, it is good to plant them in loose groups of several pieces together with other drought-loving perennials and bulbs. Only then do their stems and inflorescences, set in motion by the slightest breath of wind, truly stand out. Stipa 'Ponny Tails' is a species native to the steppes of Mexico, Texas, and Patagonia. Airy, dense clumps of hair-like delicate leaves resemble horsehair. The leaves are green, turning up to straw-colored towards the flowers. In a suitable location, it also self-seeds.

Columbine Heidi, Loukykvět

Aquilegia vulgaris

The Heidi columbine brings unprecedented lightness and romance to any garden. In the wild, it grows across Europe, where it most often colonizes the edges of groves and moister mountain meadows. Its growing requirements in our country correspond to these conditions. From our seedling, a strong perennial will quickly grow in a partially shaded or sunny spot with humus-rich soil. It is completely undemanding, easily surviving severe frosts, does not suffer from pests, and even beginners can handle its care without worries. During drier summers, powdery mildew may occasionally appear on the leaves, which you can easily solve by promptly removing the affected parts. The Heidi variety boasts delicate flowers in soft pink tones, which constantly attract bees at the turn of spring and summer. Columbines add a natural flair to perennial beds and even reliably self-seed in their favorite spots. Furthermore, they are highly valued for their green leaves, which form a beautiful undergrowth. In bouquets, they create an incredibly fresh, airy impression and will hold their shape in a vase for a full seven days.

Lady's mantle Irish Silk, Loukykvět

Alchemilla mollis

Alchemilla mollis, known as lady's mantle, is an indispensable perennial for anyone who wants to bring harmony and softness to the garden. Its home is the moister environments of mountain meadows and light forests, making it a very adaptable plant that will survive even severe frosts without problems in our climate. The 'Irish Silk' cultivar is prized for its vitality and abundant blooming, where clouds of tiny, yellow-green flowers float above clumps of gray-green leaves. It is precisely this neutral color that can work wonders in a flower bed – it softens overly sharp contrasts between other flowers and beautifully unifies the entire composition. Besides its ornamental function, lady's mantle also has practical uses. Thanks to its clumping growth and ability to quickly fill in, it is ideal for edging pathways or as an underplanting beneath taller shrubs and roses. Water droplets catch on its leaves, creating a magical spectacle in the garden. If you enjoy making bouquets, you will love lady's mantle as versatile filler greenery that matches almost anything. It will last beautiful for about ten days in a vase, and its inflorescences can also be easily dried without losing too much of their color or shape. Moreover, it is a magnet for pollinators, and its young leaves are even edible, so it also finds use in a natural kitchen.

Peony Karl Rosenfield, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

The peony **Karl Rosenfield** is a proven classic that has been grown since 1908. It was bred in the USA and boasts radiantly rich red, double flowers. While the outer petals are large, those in the middle of the flower captivate with their waviness and delicate frilling. The plant does not smell, but stands out with reliability and rich blooming on firm and long stems. These herbaceous peonies, whose ancestors (Chinese and common peonies) already decorated old monastery gardens, are ideal long-lived perennials. However, they require patience – it takes several years before the plant matures into full beauty. Blooming right in the first year after planting is not the rule. For successful growth, it is crucial to ensure the right conditions for the plant according to the cultivation guide and to indulge it with plenty of space in the bed, whether it grows independently, or in combination with grasses and bulbous plants. You can plant potted peonies during the whole season from spring to autumn.

Rosemary Barbecue, Loukykvět
Fragrant

Rosmarinus officinalis

The 'Barbecue' variety of rosemary brings the unmistakable atmosphere of the sun-drenched Mediterranean to your garden. In its native habitat in southern Europe and northern Africa, it grows wild on dry, stony slopes, where it is exposed to hot sun all day long. For this reason, it will best appreciate direct sunlight and very well-drained, nutrient-poor soil at your home, where water will not stand. When grown in a drier spot, it is also highly resistant, so you will save yourself the trouble of dealing with powdery mildew or small pests like whiteflies. You will receive a well-grown seedling in a pot, which you can transplant immediately. Because rosemary can withstand frosts down to about minus ten degrees Celsius, we most often grow it as a container plant that can be moved. During the summer, it will look great outside on the patio, and it will safely survive the winter in a cooler, bright spot indoors. In warmer regions, you can try planting it in a sheltered spot directly in a flower bed. The 'Barbecue' cultivar stands out for its upright growth and narrower, deep green leaves that are exceptionally aromatic. It is an excellent helper for lovers of grilling and natural cuisine, as its edible leaves perfectly season roasted vegetables and meat. From April to June, the plant is also decorated with small blue flowers that act as a reliable magnet for bees. Thanks to its straight and sturdy stems, you will also come to love rosemary as an excellent fragrant greenery for bouquets, where it stays fresh in a vase for many days, and its sprigs can be easily dried for floral purposes.

Phlox Sweet Summer Sensation, Loukykvět

Phlox paniculata

Phlox, also known as garden phlox, is originally a native perennial of North America. It soon achieved great popularity in European gardens and has been systematically bred since the 19th century. It is a classic perennial for cutting into bouquets, where, in addition to colorful flowers, it also delights with a gentle fragrance. We harvest as soon as roughly half of the flowers in the inflorescence have bloomed; then they last up to 10 days in a vase. Despite efforts to breed the most resistant cultivars possible, it remains true that phlox reacts extremely sensitively to climate and soil conditions, so we pay careful attention to the correct choice of site. The Sweet Summer series includes cultivars bred for greater resistance to fungal diseases. Sweet Summer Sensation has light pink flowers with a darker purplish eye. They contrast beautifully with the dark green leaves.

Shoofly plant Blue, Loukykvět

Catananche caerulea

Catananche caerulea, commonly known as Cupid's dart, is a charming plant that will win you over with its lightness and airiness. Its scientific name refers to ancient Greek legends, according to which it was used in love potions; today, however, you will appreciate it more for its undemanding nature and unique appearance. It is excellently suited for natural-style gardens, gravel beds, and drought-tolerant plantings, where it beautifully complements other perennials or ornamental grasses. It grows up to ninety centimeters tall and, despite its height, needs no support. The flowers have a lavender-blue color with a darker center and toothed petals at the ends. They bloom gradually from June to September. Cupid's dart loves drought and heat, but on the contrary, it cannot stand winter dampness, which harms it more than frost. If you provide it with a well-drained spot, it will survive temperatures down to -18 °C. It is a rewarding plant for beginner growers and experienced florists alike. Fresh flowers last a week in a vase, but they will bring you the most joy when dried. Harvest them fully open in dry weather and hang them upside down. They will keep their shape and remind you of summer all winter long.

Cultivation

Rostliny by pak byly náchylnější k houbovým chorobám. Na podzim můžete kolem rostliny rozprostřít centimetr tenkou vrstvu vyzrálého kompostu.

PREVENCE CHOROB

OŠETŘOVÁNÍ A PÉČE

New

Paeonia

The Coral Charm peony has dark coral-colored buds. They open into large semi-double flowers. Their color gradually transitions from bright pink, salmon, and peach to cream. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn.

Sea Holly, Loukykvět
For drying

Eryngium planum

Sea holly is an indispensable perennial for all lovers of naturally styled gardens. It earned its folk name - male fidelity - in times when it was used in herbal medicine as an aphrodisiac, and its roots were even candied as sweets in France and England. Today, however, you will appreciate it mainly for its low maintenance and unique appearance. Its home is on sunny hillsides and dry meadows, so even in our gardens, it will welcome well-drained, even poorer sandy soil and full sun. It produces upright, sturdy stems topped with blue-purple flowers with prickly bracts, which bring interesting structure and a silvery touch to the flowerbeds. It is literally a magnetic plant for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who find a rich food source on it. Floristically, it is extremely valuable, because its flowers are perfectly suited for cutting as well as drying for winter decorations. If you decide not to harvest it, feel free to leave it in the flowerbed all winter. Its silhouette covered in hoarfrost creates a wonderful winter effect. Although it is a short-lived perennial, in a suitable location it reliably self-seeds, so you will enjoy its beauty for many years.

Caring for it is completely undemanding, it is avoided by most diseases and pests, and it can handle frosts down to eighteen degrees below zero without any problems. It is often used in mixed borders, where it beautifully softens the overall impression, and perfectly matches various types of ornamental grasses. The Summer Breeze variety is popular for its strong and healthy growth as well as its exceptionally generous set of flowers, which grow to about one meter. If you like to create your own bouquets, do not hesitate to cut gaura for a vase. Harvesting is best done the moment the first small flowers on the stem begin to open. These delicate flowers are not suitable for drying into dried arrangements, but they will beautifully lighten up fresh bouquets.

Calamint Blue Cloud, Loukykvět

Calamintha nepeta

Lesser calamint Blue Cloud is an undemanding and modest perennial that reliably perfumes any sunny garden. Its original homeland is the sunny and dry slopes of Southern Europe, which is why it thrives best here in direct sun in well-drained, sandy, or poorer loamy soil. It handles winter without problems, tolerating frosts down to minus twenty-three degrees. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant straight into the flowerbed, where it will very soon form a compact, airy small shrub reaching a height of up to forty centimeters. It does not suffer from any diseases or pests, so even complete beginners can easily handle caring for it. Throughout late summer and into autumn, it blooms with a record number of tiny blue flowers that are so typical of the Blue Cloud variety. The whole plant emits a pleasant minty-spicy scent, and its flowers, which resemble thyme, act as a literal magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. It will look great among roses or in naturally designed steppe flowerbeds, where it naturally complements lower ornamental grasses. Additionally, both the blue flowers and green leaves are edible, so you can use them to garnish summer dishes. Lesser calamint is also excellently suited for cutting into smaller fresh bouquets, adding a fine structure to them in a vase.

An undemanding and modest perennial that blooms with a large number of tiny flowers. It blooms for a record-breaking length of time throughout late summer and autumn. It will look good among roses as well as in naturalistic steppe beds, perhaps with lower grasses. This calamint is generally more vigorous. It differs from other calamints with felted leaves by its record flowering length, stiff and shiny leaves, and also a larger number of flowers that do not form seeds and are therefore maximally durable.
