Paeonia

Peony Red Charm

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and for you to see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony in the very first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. Besides time, it needs the right conditions to flower. Check out our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars originate from Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today, we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them plenty of space in the flowerbed. Red Charm has full, rich, and large flowers in a deep red shade. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn. Show full description

Coneflower Rubinstern, Loukykvět

Echinacea purpurea

A valuable garden and medicinal perennial, originally from North America. It blooms in summer with dark purple-pink flowers. The spiky flower discs are an irresistible lure for butterflies. Lasts 7–10 days in a vase. After plucking the petals, the stems with the central discs can be dried or used in fresh bouquets as an interesting element. Rubinstern is very similar to the Magnus cultivar; the petals are darker and firmer. As they fade, they gradually pale and droop downwards.

It might seem that Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a red variant of its pink-flowering namesake. In reality, these two peonies do not have much in common, and the red shade is closer to fuchsia tones. Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a bit of a mystery; we only know that it was registered in 1980 in China. Its flowers are double and fragrant. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn.

Bleeding Heart, Loukykvět

Dicentra spectabilis

The original home of bleeding hearts is Korea and China, where they grow in light deciduous forests. They are classic garden perennials. They will look perfect in nostalgically styled flower beds; the white variant fits well even into naturalistic woodland gardens. They are popular for their heart-shaped flowers hanging on horizontal or arching stems. These weaken and die back some time after flowering; all the plant's energy then concentrates in the roots, and at that moment, we can cut the above-ground part back completely. For the rest of the year, we won't even know the bleeding heart is in the garden. It will remind us of its charm again in the spring. Perfect vase life, at least 7 days. Harvest when the first 3–4 flowers open on the stem. The basic species has pink-white flowers. In spring, the sprouting shoots have a pink tinge.

Columbine Heidi, Loukykvět

Aquilegia vulgaris

The Heidi columbine brings unprecedented lightness and romance to any garden. In the wild, it grows across Europe, where it most often colonizes the edges of groves and moister mountain meadows. Its growing requirements in our country correspond to these conditions. From our seedling, a strong perennial will quickly grow in a partially shaded or sunny spot with humus-rich soil. It is completely undemanding, easily surviving severe frosts, does not suffer from pests, and even beginners can handle its care without worries. During drier summers, powdery mildew may occasionally appear on the leaves, which you can easily solve by promptly removing the affected parts. The Heidi variety boasts delicate flowers in soft pink tones, which constantly attract bees at the turn of spring and summer. Columbines add a natural flair to perennial beds and even reliably self-seed in their favorite spots. Furthermore, they are highly valued for their green leaves, which form a beautiful undergrowth. In bouquets, they create an incredibly fresh, airy impression and will hold their shape in a vase for a full seven days.

It is an indispensable part of fragrant herbal compositions, but it will also fit perfectly alongside other ornamental perennials. Throughout the summer, stems with tiny purple flowers rise from the clumps. These not only look nice but attract a wide range of pollinators from bees to colorful butterflies. Hellebores are evergreen perennials that form slowly spreading clumps of leathery, dark green leaves. Stems usually bear four to five flowers. Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Black Knight, Loukykvět

Delphinium hybrida

The majestic larkspur Benary’s Pacific Black Knight will bring original beauty and a striking vertical structure to your garden. In the wild, the original species of larkspurs grow in lush meadows with nutritious soil. Therefore, in the garden, it will reliably appreciate full sun and sufficiently moist, humous loam. Although it is a perennial for somewhat more advanced growers, with the right approach, it will reward you richly and will survive even extreme winters with temperatures deep below the freezing point without worry. We will deliver a beautifully rooted seedling in a pot, ready for immediate planting in the flowerbed. Do not forget to give it enough space, ideally with spacings around sixty centimeters, and throughout the season, do not forget regular fertilizing. A more airy space will naturally protect the plant from powdery mildew. It works excellently in mixed borders with peonies and roses, providing them with a beautiful dark background. The Black Knight variety stands out with long stems growing up to one hundred and fifty centimeters, which are gradually adorned with deep dark purple flowers from June onwards. These literally attract bees from a wide surrounding area. When growing, keep in mind that it is poisonous and very tasty to slugs in early spring. The firm flower stalks are absolutely ideal for fresh bouquets, where they will stay fresh for about seven days. However, do not place the vase next to ripening fruit, to whose ethylene larkspur is sensitive and would wilt faster. If you want to preserve its beauty longer, try drying it. The dark flowers retain their pigment excellently and will enliven absolutely any dried arrangement.

Oriental Poppy Royal Wedding, Loukykvět

Papaver orientale

Oriental poppy Royal Wedding is an unmissable perennial that brings true elegance to the spring garden. It originally comes from the harsher conditions of the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on sunny rocky slopes and dry meadows. Because of this, it is exceptionally resilient, easily handling frosts down to minus forty degrees, and can do without complex care. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to a sunny location with well-drained loamy soil. The cultivar Royal Wedding will reward you in May and June with huge bowl-shaped flowers with pure white petals, which hide a distinct dark burgundy spot in their center. Moreover, these enchanting flowers reliably attract pollinators from far and wide. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back soon after flowering. The plant takes a break over the warmest summer to gather strength, and a smaller portion of the leaves often sprouts again only at the end of summer. Therefore, it is ideal to plant the poppy in the flower bed in close proximity to other perennials that sprout slightly later and naturally fill the empty space left by the resting poppy. It avoids diseases and needs no support, reaching a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. Just watch out for field voles, which might develop a taste for its fleshy roots. Otherwise, it is a long-lived plant that even a complete beginner can handle without worries. Given that the plant is poisonous, it is naturally not intended for consumption. The giant white flowers are also a great attraction for lovers of cut flowers, although they require a little trick. Similar to other poppies, the stems need to be harvested exactly at the moment when the buds begin to color and slightly crack. Right after cutting, we sear the ends of the stems with a flame for about twenty seconds to prevent sap leakage, and then we put them into cold water. Thanks to this procedure, they will stay beautiful for about four days in a vase and add amazing lightness to bouquets. Although these delicate flowers are not suitable for drying, they simply have no competition in fresh spring bouquets.

Catmint Six Hills Giant, Loukykvět

Nepeta faassenii

Catmints are ideal companions for roses, suitable for naturalistic gardens, and lower species also for boxes and pots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. The faassenii group is characterized by vigorous upright growth, fine foliage, and long stems suitable for cutting. Six Hills Giant has a slightly lighter flower color than Walker's Low. Although it is classified as a short-lived perennial, its exceptionally abundant and persistent blooming will completely make up for it during the season. From July to September, it forms dense spikes of tiny pink and purple flowers, which are complemented by green, highly aromatic leaves. The whole plant gives a very elegant impression and grows to a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. In the flowerbed, it looks great in larger groups, planted about half a meter apart, and gets along excellently with ornamental grasses or other drought-tolerant species. Moreover, it blooms continuously throughout the summer and acts as a huge attraction for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, providing them with a generous pasture. Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Astolat, Loukykvět

Delphinium hybrida

Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Astolat is an unmissable dominant feature among border perennials and brings classic elegance to the garden. Its original species originate from temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, where they grow in moister mountain meadows. Therefore, even in our gardens, it will appreciate a location in full sun and deep, nutrient-rich loamy and humous soil with plenty of moisture. You will receive from us an already mature seedling in a pot, which you just need to transplant to the chosen spot. Here it will quickly form a massive clump with deeply lobed green leaves. The Astolat cultivar stands out with firm stems up to a meter and a half tall, which from June carry rich inflorescences of large pink flowers with a contrasting center. During summer, these flowers reliably attract bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. After the first blooming, we recommend cutting the plant back, which will encourage another wave of blooming at the end of summer in August and September. Growing larkspurs requires a bit more attention, so it is better suited for more advanced growers. For them to stand out well and reach their full height, they need to be given enough space; the optimal spacing is around sixty centimeters. Do not forget regular fertilizing and copious watering, because in dry soil they can suffer and be more susceptible to powdery mildew. In spring, it is also important to protect the sprouting shoots from slugs and snails. However, the care invested will pay off richly. We often see them in the company of roses and peonies, with which they form a perfect romantic composition. The entire plant is poisonous, which is good to consider when choosing a planting site. On the other hand, it will please you with its tremendous frost resistance; it can easily handle temperatures dropping down to minus thirty-four degrees. We can fully enjoy their beauty not only in flowerbeds but also in fresh bouquets. For cutting into a vase, choose stems at the time when the bottom flowers are opening. They will last approximately seven days in water, just be careful not to place the vase near ripening fruit. They are sensitive to ethylene, which causes rapid shedding of petals. You can also try drying them for floristic purposes. If you hang the inflorescences in a dark and airy place, the flowers will perfectly retain their rich pink color and serve as an interesting element for winter decorations.

Columbine Kristall, Loukykvět

Aquilegia vulgaris

The common columbine is a versatile perennial that will reliably inhabit both rural and modern flowerbeds. In the wild, it grows on the edges of forests and in light groves across all of Europe, which is why it thrives best in the garden in full sun to partial shade and ordinary loamy soil rich in humus. Its main charm lies in its unusually shaped flowers, but it is also valuable for its very early sprouting green leaves, which awaken the garden after winter. You will receive a beautifully grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to your chosen spot. Although the plant is poisonous, it represents a huge asset for gardeners. Even complete beginners can manage growing it, pests avoid it, and it easily survives severe frosts dropping to minus thirty-four degrees. During May and June, delicate flowers bloom on sturdy, sixty to eighty-centimeter-tall stems, bringing typical airiness and lightness to the planting. The 'Kristall' cultivar is a large-flowered variety that stands out with pure white flowers and prominent spurs. These act as a reliable magnet for bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial pollinators. Keep in mind that in a favorable location, columbine very willingly self-seeds, taking care of natural-looking wild stands. It works well in perennial beds and as an undergrowth beneath taller shrubs. If you like bringing a piece of the garden home, columbine certainly won't disappoint you. It is perfectly suited for cutting and will bring a novel structure to spring bouquets. Fresh flowers will bring you joy in a vase for about seven days. If you leave some of the flowers to finish blooming on the flowerbed, they will form interesting seed pods, which are highly popular among florists for creating various natural decorations and can also be dried well. Just watch out for the occasional occurrence of powdery mildew during the drier months, but otherwise, the plant needs almost no care.

Cultivation

GENERAL INFO

Peony roots are live material, which is why we store them under specific conditions—we must ensure the roots have sufficient moisture to prevent them from drying out too much. However, when stored in moist conditions, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots just before shipping to keep the storage time in sealed packaging as short as possible.

PLANTING

Do not delay planting your peonies, so that their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as mentioned, storage is demanding. When planting, it is necessary to ensure the correct planting depth and avoid "drowning" the plants, otherwise, they will not bloom. Plant them so that after watering, the tips of the growth buds are slightly visible above the surface of the substrate. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2–3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the peony root. Account for the soil settling after watering. If planting late in the autumn, you can cover new plants with brushwood before winter.

LOCATION

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. However, they are quite adaptable and can thrive in semi-shaded locations, although they need at least 6 hours of sunshine for abundant flowering. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for each peony, where they will not be crowded by other vigorously growing perennials.

SOIL CONDITIONS

Peonies need well-drained, loamy, and nutrient-rich garden soil that retains reasonable moisture. They do not tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

WATERING

Newly planted peonies need watering especially during their first spring during dry periods. Mature peonies are more resilient, and watering is only necessary in the event of a very dry spring and early summer. After flowering, they generally do not have issues with summer drought.

FERTILIZING

Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium is suitable in the spring. Conversely, watch out for excessive nitrogen, as this would make the plants more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a thin, centimeter-thick layer of mature compost around the plant.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Maintain sufficient distance when planting so that air circulates well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers and any diseased leaves. These must not be added to the compost but should be disposed of with regular household waste.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

In the first years after planting, remove side buds to help the plants grow stronger. At the end of autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Plan for plant support, as all herbaceous peonies require it. Beware of spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can tolerate temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they will die. In this case, protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.

(NOT) TRANSPLANTING

Choose the location carefully; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants by dividing them so that each part has three to seven buds. The best period is from September to October.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.

Peony Karl Rosenfield, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

The peony **Karl Rosenfield** is a proven classic that has been grown since 1908. It was bred in the USA and boasts radiantly rich red, double flowers. While the outer petals are large, those in the middle of the flower captivate with their waviness and delicate frilling. The plant does not smell, but stands out with reliability and rich blooming on firm and long stems. These herbaceous peonies, whose ancestors (Chinese and common peonies) already decorated old monastery gardens, are ideal long-lived perennials. However, they require patience – it takes several years before the plant matures into full beauty. Blooming right in the first year after planting is not the rule. For successful growth, it is crucial to ensure the right conditions for the plant according to the cultivation guide and to indulge it with plenty of space in the bed, whether it grows independently, or in combination with grasses and bulbous plants. You can plant potted peonies during the whole season from spring to autumn.

Lady's mantle Irish Silk, Loukykvět

Alchemilla mollis

Alchemilla mollis, known as lady's mantle, is an indispensable perennial for anyone who wants to bring harmony and softness to the garden. Its home is the moister environments of mountain meadows and light forests, making it a very adaptable plant that will survive even severe frosts without problems in our climate. The 'Irish Silk' cultivar is prized for its vitality and abundant blooming, where clouds of tiny, yellow-green flowers float above clumps of gray-green leaves. It is precisely this neutral color that can work wonders in a flower bed – it softens overly sharp contrasts between other flowers and beautifully unifies the entire composition. Besides its ornamental function, lady's mantle also has practical uses. Thanks to its clumping growth and ability to quickly fill in, it is ideal for edging pathways or as an underplanting beneath taller shrubs and roses. Water droplets catch on its leaves, creating a magical spectacle in the garden. If you enjoy making bouquets, you will love lady's mantle as versatile filler greenery that matches almost anything. It will last beautiful for about ten days in a vase, and its inflorescences can also be easily dried without losing too much of their color or shape. Moreover, it is a magnet for pollinators, and its young leaves are even edible, so it also finds use in a natural kitchen.

Russian Sage, Loukykvět

Perovskia atriplicifolia

Russian sage reliably brings a touch of sunny steppes into the garden and places almost no demands on care. These sparsely branched subshrubs originally come from harsh, rocky areas from Afghanistan to Tibet, where they grow on open sun-drenched plains. Sea Holly, Loukykvět
For drying

Eryngium planum

Sea holly is an indispensable perennial for all lovers of naturally styled gardens. It earned its folk name - male fidelity - in times when it was used in herbal medicine as an aphrodisiac, and its roots were even candied as sweets in France and England. Today, however, you will appreciate it mainly for its low maintenance and unique appearance. Its home is on sunny hillsides and dry meadows, so even in our gardens, it will welcome well-drained, even poorer sandy soil and full sun. It produces upright, sturdy stems topped with blue-purple flowers with prickly bracts, which bring interesting structure and a silvery touch to the flowerbeds. It is literally a magnetic plant for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who find a rich food source on it. Floristically, it is extremely valuable, because its flowers are perfectly suited for cutting as well as drying for winter decorations. If you decide not to harvest it, feel free to leave it in the flowerbed all winter. Its silhouette covered in hoarfrost creates a wonderful winter effect. Although it is a short-lived perennial, in a suitable location it reliably self-seeds, so you will enjoy its beauty for many years.

Calamint Blue Cloud, Loukykvět

Calamintha nepeta

Lesser calamint Blue Cloud is an undemanding and modest perennial that reliably perfumes any sunny garden. Its original homeland is the sunny and dry slopes of Southern Europe, which is why it thrives best here in direct sun in well-drained, sandy, or poorer loamy soil. It handles winter without problems, tolerating frosts down to minus twenty-three degrees. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant straight into the flowerbed, where it will very soon form a compact, airy small shrub reaching a height of up to forty centimeters. It does not suffer from any diseases or pests, so even complete beginners can easily handle caring for it. Throughout late summer and into autumn, it blooms with a record number of tiny blue flowers that are so typical of the Blue Cloud variety. The whole plant emits a pleasant minty-spicy scent, and its flowers, which resemble thyme, act as a literal magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies. It will look great among roses or in naturally designed steppe flowerbeds, where it naturally complements lower ornamental grasses. Additionally, both the blue flowers and green leaves are edible, so you can use them to garnish summer dishes. Lesser calamint is also excellently suited for cutting into smaller fresh bouquets, adding a fine structure to them in a vase.

Rudbeckia Goldsturm, Loukykvět

Rudbeckia fulgida

Rudbeckia Goldsturm is a reliable and long-lived perennial that will bring the warm tones of late summer and autumn into your garden. It originally comes from the open plains and prairies of North America, so it delights most in sunny locations with common garden soil, whether it is loamy, humus-rich, or clayey. You will receive from us an already grown seedling in a pot, which you just need to transplant to the chosen spot in the flower bed. It is a completely undemanding plant, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and easily survives severe frosts. The Goldsturm cultivar grows to a height of about seventy centimeters and does not need support. From August to October, it produces a flood of golden-yellow flowers with distinctly dark centers. These edible flowers attract pollinators and fit perfectly into both prairie and rustic plantings. Rudbeckia is also great for cutting, lasting around ten days in a vase. In addition, the distinctive dark centers can be easily dried. If you leave them in the flower bed over the winter, they will provide a wonderful spectacle.

Gaura Summer Breeze, Loukykvět

Gaura lindheimeri

The charming gaura comes from the sun-drenched plains of Texas and Louisiana and represents exactly the plant that can liven up any drought-tolerant planting. It is a naturally profusely blooming perennial that delights in full sun and well-drained, sandy, and nutrient-poor soil. You will receive from us an already grown seedling in a pot, which will quickly form a vigorous clump after being transplanted into the garden. From early summer until late autumn, it will delight you with a flood of tiny flowers in pure white and delicate pink tones. The flowers gently sway in the breeze and with their appearance resemble a flock of tiny butterflies, which also really like to land on the plant, as do bees and bumblebees. Although gaura is known as a short-lived perennial, thanks to its willing self-seeding, it will last for many years in your garden. Caring for it is completely undemanding, it is avoided by most diseases and pests, and it can handle frosts down to eighteen degrees below zero without any problems. It is often used in mixed borders, where it beautifully softens the overall impression, and perfectly matches various types of ornamental grasses. The Summer Breeze variety is popular for its strong and healthy growth as well as its exceptionally generous set of flowers, which grow to about one meter. If you like to create your own bouquets, do not hesitate to cut gaura for a vase. Harvesting is best done the moment the first small flowers on the stem begin to open. These delicate flowers are not suitable for drying into dried arrangements, but they will beautifully lighten up fresh bouquets.
