Peony Red Charm

Yes, this cultivar has beautiful, full, and large flowers that become very heavy after rain.

To prevent the stems from bending to the ground or breaking under the weight of the blooms, it is advisable to provide the plant with a circular support ring. Ideally, install it in the spring when the peony starts to sprout so the stems can grow through it naturally.

Autumn care is simple. Once the first frosts arrive and the leaves begin to yellow or brown and collapse, cut the entire plant down close to the ground (approx. 5–10 cm above the surface). Remove the cut parts from the bed so that mold spores do not overwinter in them. The roots will safely overwinter in the ground.

Peonies love nutrients but do not tolerate over-fertilization with nitrogen (this leads to susceptibility to mold).

• Spring: Use organic fertilizer or a fertilizer with a higher potassium content to support flowering.
• Autumn: You can spread a thin layer of mature compost around the plant.
• Fresh manure: Never apply this to peonies, as it could burn the roots and lead to the development of diseases.

Peonies do not like being transplanted and can thrive in one spot for decades. If you must transplant them, do so in the autumn (September/October).

Carefully dig up the older clump, divide it into smaller sections (each must have 3–5 eyes and healthy roots), and replant immediately in a new location at the correct depth. Expect the plant to bloom less or not at all for a year or two after transplanting.

The Red Charm peony is fully hardy (zone 3a, down to -37 °C) and overwinters in our climate without any issues.

The only exception is the first winter after planting, when we recommend covering the planting site with evergreen boughs (especially if planting in the autumn) to mitigate the impact of freezing temperatures without snow cover on the newly planted specimen.

Water requirements change as the plant matures:

• After planting and the first spring: Peonies need regular watering so the roots do not dry out. Keep the soil slightly moist, but not waterlogged.
• Mature plants: They are quite hardy. They mainly require watering in the spring before flowering if the weather is dry. After flowering in the summer, they tolerate drought well and only need to be watered during extreme heat.

Correct planting depth is absolutely crucial for peonies. If you plant them too deep, they will not bloom, even if they grow.

Plant the root so that the buds (eyes) point upward and, after covering with soil and watering, they are at most 2 to 3 cm below the surface. The tips of the buds can even protrude slightly. The planting hole should be sufficiently spacious (twice as wide and deep as the root), but the actual planting depth of the plant must be shallow.

Do not worry, this is a common occurrence. Peony roots are living material and require moisture for storage, which can cause light surface mold to form in a sealed package.

This is merely a cosmetic defect that does not affect the health of the plant or its future growth. Simply wipe off the mold or rinse the root and plant it as soon as possible.

This specific 'Red Charm' cultivar is not fragrant. It is grown primarily for its stunning deep red color and the perfect shape of its full blooms, rather than for its scent.

Growing peonies requires a bit of patience. Peonies are long-lived perennials that need time to establish their roots.

• First year: Flowering is a rare exception. The plant invests its energy into building a root system.
• Second and third year: Flowers begin to appear, but the plant has not yet reached its full size.
• Full beauty: Peonies usually show their full potential only after several years in their location.

If buds appear in the very first year, we recommend pinching them off so the plant does not exhaust itself.

The most common problem is gray mold (Botrytis), which manifests as wilting stems and browning of buds or leaves, especially in wet weather.

Prevention:

• Maintain the recommended spacing (at least 90 cm) so air can circulate between the plants.
• Do not overwater them.
• Fertilize with moderation (watch out for nitrogen).
• In the autumn, thoroughly remove and dispose of (do not put on the compost!) all dead leaves and stems.

Ants on peony buds are not pests. The buds secrete a sweet nectar that attracts ants. Ants do not harm the plant; on the contrary, they can help protect the bud from other pests. As soon as the flower opens, the ants usually disappear. There is no need to intervene or spray them with chemicals.

The 'Red Charm' peony loves the sun. Choose a location for it where it will get at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

At the same time, it needs space – it should have about 1 m² of space around it so that it is not in competition with the roots of trees, shrubs, or other aggressive perennials. Although it can tolerate partial shade, it will bloom most abundantly in full sun.

Peonies require deep, well-draining, and nutrient-rich soil.

• Dig a sufficiently deep hole.
• If you have heavy clay soil, improve it with sand or gravel for better drainage – peonies do not tolerate waterlogging.
• You can add mature compost to the bottom layer (it should not come into direct contact with the roots during planting to avoid burning them).
• The soil should ideally be loamy and humus-rich.

Certainly! Thanks to its sturdy stems and long-lasting flowers, the 'Red Charm' peony is excellent for cutting.

Cut the flowers at the "soft bud" stage (when the bud begins to show color and feels as soft as a marshmallow to the touch) so they last as long as possible in a vase. However, never cut all the leaves off one plant; leave at least some leaves so the plant can photosynthesize and store energy for the following year.
