Peony Marie Lemoine

Peonies are valued in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant flowering. Therefore, a flowering peony in the very first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. To flower, it needs proper conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-cultivated garden plants, and most cultivars originate from Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the bed. Marie Lemoine is a peony cultivated since 1869. Its flowers are full, white with a lemon tint in the center and crimson-colored edges on a few petals. Appreciated as one of the most beautiful peonies. We treat it to the most suitable conditions possible to prevent fungal diseases. Show full description

Peony Shirley Temple, Loukykvět

Paeonia

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony the very first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. To bloom, it needs the right conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the flowerbed. Shirley Temple is one of the most popular peonies. The buds have a light pink color and transition to ivory white during flowering. A sunny location and good soil conditions are important for the health of this peony.

It would seem that Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a red variant of its pink-flowering namesake. In reality, these two peonies do not have much in common, and the red shade is closer to fuchsia tones. Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a bit of a mystery; we only know that it was registered in 1980 in China. Its flowers are double and fragrant.

Tulip Rosy Diamond, Loukykvět

Tulipa

The Rosy Diamond tulip is a wonderful addition to the spring garden and a direct sibling to our popular Blue Diamond variety. That one has had a place in our tulip beds from the very beginning and has always been an absolute reliable performer, both in the vase and out in the flowerbed. When we discovered it had a pink sibling, our joy was immense. Rosy Diamond reaches a height of thirty to forty-five centimeters and immediately catches the eye with its darker stems. They form a perfect contrast to the pastel pink flowers with their almost translucent petals. As the flower gradually ages and matures, its edges lighten slightly, which gives the whole tulip an extraordinary delicacy and dynamism. In the garden, it complements other spring bulbs perfectly, and for lovers of cut flowers, it is a clear choice for us. It looks incredibly fragile in a vase, yet it also lasts for a very long time.

Cultivation

GENERAL INFO

Peony roots are living material, which is why we store them under specific conditions — we must ensure the roots have sufficient moisture to prevent excessive drying. However, when stored in moisture, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots right before dispatch to keep their storage time in closed packaging as short as possible.

PLANTING

Therefore, do not delay planting the peonies so that their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as we have already written, storage is more demanding. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct planting depth and not to "drown" the plants, because then they would not bloom. We plant them so that after watering, the buds of the shoots protrude slightly above the surface of the substrate with their tips. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2-3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the peony root. Expect the soil to settle after watering. If you are planting late in the autumn, you can cover the new plants with brushwood before winter.

LOCATION

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. However, they are quite adaptable and can also thrive in partially shaded locations, although they need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight for abundant flowering. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for a peony, where they will not have to compete even with other vigorously growing perennials.

SOIL CONDITIONS

Peonies need well-draining, loamy, and nutrient-rich garden soil that retains adequate moisture well. They cannot tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

WATERING

Newly planted peonies need watering, especially during their first spring in periods of drought. Mature peonies will be more resilient, and watering will come in handy only in the event of a very dry spring and early summer. After flowering, they usually no longer have problems with summer drought.

FERTILIZING

Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium in the spring is suitable. On the other hand, beware of too much nitrogen. The plants would then be more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a one-centimeter-thin layer of mature compost around the plant.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Maintain a sufficient distance when planting so that air circulates well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers, and remove any diseased leaves. These must not be placed on the compost, but thrown away with regular household waste.

TREATMENT AND CARE

In the first years after planting, we remove side buds so that the plants grow stronger. In late autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Count on support for the plants; all herbaceous peonies need it. Watch out for spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can tolerate temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they die off. In this case, we protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.

(not) TRANSPLANTING

Choose the location well; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants, which we divide during the process, ensuring each part has three to seven buds. The most suitable period is from September to October.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.

Peony Gardenia, Loukykvět

Gardenia is popular as a wedding peony thanks to its color. Ivory white fragrant flowers unfold from pink buds. It blooms in the middle of the peony season. It was bred in 1955.
