Peony Karl Rosenfield

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony the very first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. To bloom, it needs the right conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the flowerbed. The Karl Rosenfield peony has brilliantly deep red, double flowers with large outer petals. The petals in the center of the flower are wavy and finely serrated. Although it does not have a scent, it blooms reliably and abundantly on strong and long stems. It was bred in the USA and has been grown since 1908. Show full description

It would seem that Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a red variant of its pink-flowering namesake. In reality, these two peonies do not have much in common, and the red shade is closer to fuchsia tones. Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a bit of a mystery; we only know that it was registered in 1980 in China. Its flowers are double and fragrant.

Peony Coral Charm, Loukykvět

Paeonia

The 'Coral Charm' peony captivates with its dark coral buds, which gradually open into large, semi-double flowers. During blooming, it offers a breathtaking color transformation, with tones shifting from vibrant pink through salmon and peach to a soft cream. These long-lived perennials require a certain amount of patience from the gardener. It takes them several years to grow to their full beauty, and blooming in the very first year after planting is more the exception than the rule. For successful growing, not only time is key, but also the right conditions and plenty of space in the flower bed – we therefore recommend studying our growing guide. Most cultivars of herbaceous peonies are derived from the Chinese and common peonies, which were a traditional part of monastery gardens. Today, we love to combine them with other perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs.

Larkspur QIS White, Loukykvět

Delphinium consolida

Delphinium consolida, known better as Larkspur, is a typical annual for both country and modern gardens. The 'QIS White' cultivar stands out with pure white flowers that densely cover long, straight stems. These can grow up to one hundred and twenty centimeters in height, creating an interesting layer in the flower bed and adding airiness to the space. The pure white color acts as a great neutral element that easily connects even very colorful flowers in the vicinity. These are wonderful spring beauties that are hard to beat at the turn of spring and summer. They are very easy to grow from seeds and pose no major challenge for beginners. In floristry, they are suitable for wedding bouquets and for drying. For a perfect cut, you must be quick and harvest the stems before all the buds have fully opened. We recommend sowing the seeds gradually at two-week intervals during the spring or at the end of summer so you can enjoy the beauty of these flowers for as long as possible.

Cornflower Tall Double Blue Boy, Loukykvět

Centaurea cyanus

The blue cornflower is an absolute classic of our fields and meadows, which probably needs no lengthy introduction. However, the 'Tall Double Blue Boy' variety brings something extra. Thanks to its strong stems growing up to eighty centimeters tall, this annual is perfectly suited for cutting, adding true rustic charm to bouquets. But its use doesn't end in the vase. The flowers keep their fantastic color even after drying! At weddings, we loved using them in flower crowns and corsages, where they have excellent stamina! The petals are edible. They serve perfectly as an original garnish for summer salads, desserts, or festive cakes. Moreover, in the garden, it functions as a reliable magnet for bees and bumblebees, who simply go crazy for its nectar.

Cultivation

GENERAL INFO

Peony roots are living material, which is why we store them under specific conditions — we must ensure sufficient moisture for the roots to prevent them from drying out excessively. When stored in damp conditions, however, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots just before shipping so that their time in a closed package is as short as possible.

PLANTING

Do not delay planting your peonies, so their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as we mentioned, storage is demanding. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct planting depth and not "drown" the plants, as they would then not bloom. We plant them so that, after watering, the shoot buds slightly protrude above the surface of the substrate. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2-3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and deep as the peony root. Expect the soil to settle after watering. If you are planting late in the autumn, you can cover the new plants with brushwood before winter.

LOCATION

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. However, they are quite adaptable and can thrive in semi-shaded positions, though for abundant flowering they need at least 6 hours of sunshine. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for a peony, where they will not be competed with by other lushly growing perennials.

SOIL CONDITIONS

Peonies need permeable, loamy, and nutrient-rich garden soil that retains reasonable moisture well. They do not tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

WATERING

Newly planted peonies need watering especially during their first spring during dry periods. Mature peonies are more resilient, and watering is only useful in the event of a very dry spring and early summer. After blooming, they generally do not have issues with summer drought.

FERTILIZATION

Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium is suitable in the spring. Conversely, watch out for excessive amounts of nitrogen. The plants would then be more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a centimeter-thin layer of well-matured compost around the plant.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Maintain sufficient distance when planting so that air can circulate well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers and remove any diseased leaves. These must not be put in the compost but should be disposed of with regular household waste.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

In the first years after planting, we remove side buds so that the plants grow stronger. At the end of autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Expect to provide support for the plants; all herbaceous peonies need it. Watch out for spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can tolerate temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they die. In this case, protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.

(NOT) TRANSPLANTING

Choose the location carefully; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants, which can be divided so that each part has three to seven buds. The most suitable period is from September to October.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.

Peony Karl Rosenfield, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

The peony **Karl Rosenfield** is a proven classic that has been grown since 1908. It was bred in the USA and boasts radiantly rich red, double flowers. While the outer petals are large, those in the middle of the flower captivate with their waviness and delicate frilling. The plant does not smell, but stands out with reliability and rich blooming on firm and long stems. These herbaceous peonies, whose ancestors (Chinese and common peonies) already decorated old monastery gardens, are ideal long-lived perennials. However, they require patience – it takes several years before the plant matures into full beauty. Blooming right in the first year after planting is not the rule. For successful growth, it is crucial to ensure the right conditions for the plant according to the cultivation guide and to indulge it with plenty of space in the bed, whether it grows independently, or in combination with grasses and bulbous plants. You can plant potted peonies during the whole season from spring to autumn.

Peony Shirley Temple, Loukykvět

Paeonia

Shirley Temple is one of the most popular peonies. The buds have a light pink color and transition to ivory white during flowering. A sunny location and good soil conditions are important for the health of this peony.

This Peony is very similar to the famous 'Sarah Bernhardt' Peony, from which it was bred. The difference lies in the color shade. The 'Alexander Fleming' Peony is several degrees more saturated. Both combine very well together.
