Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony the very first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. To bloom, it needs the right conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars have their origins in Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the flowerbed. Shirley Temple is one of the most popular peonies. The buds have a light pink color and transition to ivory white during flowering. A sunny location and good soil conditions are important for the health of this peony. Show full description

Peony Coral Sunset, Loukykvět

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and for you to see rich flowering. Therefore, a blooming Peony right in the first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. To flower, it needs proper conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the bed. 'Coral Sunset' has the largest proportion of warm orange of all coral Peonies and also the strongest stems in its color group, which easily support large buds and subsequently semi-double fragrant flowers. It would seem that Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a red variant of its pink-flowering namesake. In reality, these two peonies do not have much in common, and the red shade is closer to fuchsia tones. Red Sarah Bernhardt is simply a bit of a mystery; we only know that it was registered in 1980 in China. Its flowers are double and fragrant.

Peony Coral Charm, Loukykvět

Paeonia

The 'Coral Charm' peony captivates with its dark coral buds, which gradually open into large, semi-double flowers. During blooming, it offers a breathtaking color transformation, with tones shifting from vibrant pink through salmon and peach to a soft cream. These long-lived perennials require a certain amount of patience from the gardener. It takes them several years to grow to their full beauty, and blooming in the very first year after planting is more the exception than the rule. For successful growing, not only time is key, but also the right conditions and plenty of space in the flower bed – we therefore recommend studying our growing guide. Most cultivars of herbaceous peonies are derived from the Chinese and common peonies, which were a traditional part of monastery gardens. Today, we love to combine them with other perennials, ornamental grasses, and bulbs.

Larkspur QIS White, Loukykvět

Delphinium consolida

Delphinium consolida, known better as Larkspur, is a typical annual for both country and modern gardens. The 'QIS White' cultivar stands out with pure white flowers that densely cover long, straight stems. These can grow up to one hundred and twenty centimeters in height, creating an interesting layer in the flower bed and adding airiness to the space. The pure white color acts as a great neutral element that easily connects even very colorful flowers in the vicinity. These are wonderful spring beauties that are hard to beat at the turn of spring and summer. They are very easy to grow from seeds and pose no major challenge for beginners. In floristry, they are suitable for wedding bouquets and for drying. For a perfect cut, you must be quick and harvest the stems before all the buds have fully opened. We recommend sowing the seeds gradually at two-week intervals during the spring or at the end of summer so you can enjoy the beauty of these flowers for as long as possible.

Cornflower Tall Double Blue Boy, Loukykvět

Thanks to its strong stems growing up to eighty centimeters tall, this annual is perfectly suited for cutting, adding true rustic charm to bouquets. But its use doesn't end in the vase. The flowers keep their fantastic color even after drying! At weddings, we loved using them in flower crowns and corsages, where they have excellent stamina! The petals are edible. Cultivation

GENERAL INFO

Peony roots are living material, which is why we store them under specific conditions. We must ensure the roots have sufficient moisture to prevent them from drying out excessively. When stored in damp conditions, however, a light surface mold may appear; this is a cosmetic phenomenon that does not affect subsequent growth. We pack the roots just before shipping to keep the storage time in sealed packaging as short as possible.

PLANTING

Do not delay planting your peonies so their roots do not dry out too much during storage; as we mentioned, storage is demanding. When planting, it is necessary to pay attention to the correct planting depth and not "drown" the plants, as they would then fail to bloom. Plant them so that, after watering, the tips of the buds protrude slightly above the surface of the substrate. The lowest buds should be a maximum of 2-3 centimeters below the surface. The planting hole should be twice as wide and as deep as the peony root. Account for soil settling after watering. If planting late in the autumn, you can cover the new plants with brushwood before winter.

LOCATION

Peonies bloom best in a sunny spot. They are quite adaptable, however, and can thrive in partial shade, though they need at least 6 hours of sunshine for abundant flowering. All peonies need plenty of space around them; they do not like competition from shrubs or hedges. You should reserve an area of one square meter for a peony, where they will not be competed with by other lush-growing perennials.

SOIL CONDITIONS

Peonies need permeable, loamy, nutrient-rich garden soil that retains reasonable moisture well. They do not tolerate waterlogging in overly heavy soil.

WATERING

Newly planted peonies require watering especially during their first spring during dry spells. Mature peonies will be more resilient, and watering will only be beneficial in the case of a very dry spring and early summer. After flowering, they usually do not have problems with summer drought.

FERTILIZING

Peonies need plenty of nutrients; an organic fertilizer rich in potassium is suitable in the spring. Conversely, watch out for excessive amounts of nitrogen, which would make the plants more susceptible to fungal diseases. In the autumn, you can spread a thin, one-centimeter layer of mature compost around the plant.

DISEASE PREVENTION

Maintain sufficient distance when planting so that air can circulate well between the plants. Regularly remove dead flowers and remove any diseased leaves. These must not be placed in the compost, but should be disposed of with regular household waste.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE

In the first years after planting, remove side buds so the plants grow stronger. At the end of autumn, you can remove dead leaves. Plan for plant support, as all herbaceous peonies need it. Watch out for spring frosts, especially if they follow a mild winter. Sprouting flower buds can withstand temperatures dropping to -3°C; at lower temperatures, they will die off. In such cases, protect the peonies with non-woven fabric.

(NOT) TRANSPLANTING

Choose the location carefully; peonies prefer undisturbed growth without transplanting. This is possible with older plants, which can be divided so that each part has three to seven buds. The most suitable period is from September to October.

The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.

It belongs among the late-flowering varieties, and its flowers are double and fragrant.

Monsieur Jules Elie is a breathtakingly pink peony with a full flower and a magical fragrance. Its slender stems need support to carry the double flowers.
