Paeonia

Peony Catharina Fontijn

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and before you see abundant blooming. Therefore, a blooming peony right the first year after planting is rather an exception, definitely not the rule. To bloom, it needs time and the right conditions. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants and most cultivars have their origin in Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. But we always give them enough space in the bed. Catharina Fontijn is a traditional Dutch classic in shades of pink. Pay attention to choosing a suitable location; this peony does not like waterlogged places, plenty of sunshine will benefit it. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn. Show full description

Peony Coral Charm, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and for you to see abundant flowering. Therefore, a blooming peony in the very first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. Besides time, it needs the right conditions to flower. Check out our growing guide. Herbaceous garden peonies are one of the longest-bred garden plants, and most cultivars originate from Chinese and medicinal peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today, we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them plenty of space in the flowerbed. The Coral Charm peony has dark coral-colored buds. They open into large semi-double flowers. Their color gradually transitions from bright pink, salmon, and peach to cream. Potted peonies can be planted from spring to autumn.

Oriental Poppy Royal Wedding, Loukykvět

Papaver orientale

Oriental poppy Royal Wedding is an unmissable perennial that brings true elegance to the spring garden. It originally comes from the harsher conditions of the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it grows on sunny rocky slopes and dry meadows. Because of this, it is exceptionally resilient, easily handling frosts down to minus forty degrees, and can do without complex care. You will receive a grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to a sunny location with well-drained loamy soil. The cultivar Royal Wedding will reward you in May and June with huge bowl-shaped flowers with pure white petals, which hide a distinct dark burgundy spot in their center. Moreover, these enchanting flowers reliably attract pollinators from far and wide. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back soon after flowering. The plant takes a break over the warmest summer to gather strength, and a smaller portion of the leaves often sprouts again only at the end of summer. Therefore, it is ideal to plant the poppy in the flower bed in close proximity to other perennials that sprout slightly later and naturally fill the empty space left by the resting poppy. It avoids diseases and needs no support, reaching a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. Just watch out for field voles, which might develop a taste for its fleshy roots. Otherwise, it is a long-lived plant that even a complete beginner can handle without worries. Given that the plant is poisonous, it is naturally not intended for consumption. The giant white flowers are also a great attraction for lovers of cut flowers, although they require a little trick. Similar to other poppies, the stems need to be harvested exactly at the moment when the buds begin to color and slightly crack. Right after cutting, we sear the ends of the stems with a flame for about twenty seconds to prevent sap leakage, and then we put them into cold water. Thanks to this procedure, they will stay beautiful for about four days in a vase and add amazing lightness to bouquets. Although these delicate flowers are not suitable for drying, they simply have no competition in fresh spring bouquets.

Knautia Red Knight, Loukykvět

Knautia macedonica

Macedonian scabious is an abundantly and long-blooming, undemanding perennial that will bring the untamed charm of summer meadows to the garden. Its wild form originates from the sun-drenched Balkans, where it naturally grows on sunny hillsides and in warm thickets. You will receive from us a mature seedling in a pot, which just needs to be transplanted into well-drained loamy or sandy soil in the sun or partial shade. Here it will quickly take root and form a vigorous clump. The Red Knight cultivar enchants with slender stems up to ninety centimeters tall, which all summer from June to September carry a flood of dark burgundy to deep wine-red flowers. These edible flowers act as a huge attraction for bees, bumblebees, and other insects. The plant is an ideal choice for beginners because it reliably resists frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees and does not suffer from any pests or diseases. Although it belongs to short-lived perennials, in a suitable place it gladly self-seeds. It will fit perfectly into naturalistically designed plantings with ornamental grasses and is popularly used in sweeping meadow bouquets. We recommend cutting the flowers fully open; they will then stay beautifully fresh in a vase for several days.

Woodland Sage Caradonna, Loukykvět

Salvia nemorosa

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.

Foxglove Hanabee White, Loukykvět

Digitalis purpurea

Native to Central Europe, originating from clearings, damp meadows, and bright forest edges. Usually a biennial or short-lived perennial. In the autumn of the first year, the plant forms a basal rosette of leaves; flowering stems grow from these in the spring. Further development depends on the chosen location. In some places, it survives for another season; elsewhere, we must rely on self-seeding or plant new plants. All parts of the foxglove are poisonous. It lasts 6 to 8 days in a vase. A cultivar from the award-winning Hanabi series. Apart from its ability to bloom in the first year after sowing, its great advantage is its rich branching, creating literally a firework of flowers. The Japanese word 'hanabi' means firework. The connection to the English term for a bee reminds us of the importance of richly flowering perennials for pollinators.

Autumn Moor Grass, Loukykvět

Sesleria autumnalis

Autumn moor grass is an exceptionally hardy ornamental grass that introduces fresh greenery to the garden right from early spring. Native to the rocky slopes of the Balkans, it is well-adapted to free-draining soils, making it an ideal choice for novice gardeners. It forms neat clumps growing thirty to fifty centimeters tall. Its greatest asset is its bright green foliage, which emerges early and remains in pristine condition in the borders well into winter. The plant is untouched by diseases or pests and handles severe frosts superbly. In August and September, delicate creamy-beige flowers appear above the foliage. These rather subtle spikelets give the plant an elegant, refined look. In the garden, it acts as a perfect filler perennial for sunny or partially shaded spots. It looks absolutely stunning paired with calamint, airy gaura, or flowering oregano. Its delicate flowers and leaves are easily used as foliage filler in fresh bouquets, or they can be dried for small-scale floristry projects.

Lady's mantle Irish Silk, Loukykvět

Alchemilla mollis

Alchemilla mollis, known as lady's mantle, is an indispensable perennial for anyone who wants to bring harmony and softness to the garden. Its home is the moister environments of mountain meadows and light forests, making it a very adaptable plant that will survive even severe frosts without problems in our climate. The 'Irish Silk' cultivar is prized for its vitality and abundant blooming, where clouds of tiny, yellow-green flowers float above clumps of gray-green leaves. It is precisely this neutral color that can work wonders in a flower bed – it softens overly sharp contrasts between other flowers and beautifully unifies the entire composition. Besides its ornamental function, lady's mantle also has practical uses. Thanks to its clumping growth and ability to quickly fill in, it is ideal for edging pathways or as an underplanting beneath taller shrubs and roses. Water droplets catch on its leaves, creating a magical spectacle in the garden. If you enjoy making bouquets, you will love lady's mantle as versatile filler greenery that matches almost anything. It will last beautiful for about ten days in a vase, and its inflorescences can also be easily dried without losing too much of their color or shape. Moreover, it is a magnet for pollinators, and its young leaves are even edible, so it also finds use in a natural kitchen.

Dahlia Café Au Lait is an absolute icon among dahlias and unrivaled as the best-selling item on our farm. Its huge flowers, often reaching the size of a dinner plate, cannot be overlooked. Phlox Sweet Summer Compact Purple Bicolor, Loukykvět

Phlox paniculata

Garden phlox, often called simply phlox, is a perennial that we immediately associate with country gardens and summer relaxation. It originally comes from the more humid regions of North America, but it naturalized in European gardens back in the nineteenth century, and an endless array of cultivars has been created since then. Phloxes are prized not only for their flood of flowers in the summer but also for their subtle spicy fragrance that wafts through the garden, especially in the early evening. It is a plant that literally magnetizes bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators, bringing a lot of life into the flower bed. In a garden composition, it perfectly complements taller perennials, covering the lower parts of their stems. This specific cultivar from the 'Sweet Summer' series stands out, as the name suggests, with a lower and compact growth of around fifty to sixty centimeters. Its flowers are bicolor with a distinct deep purple eye and edging, which looks very decorative. Despite breeding efforts for maximum resistance, it remains true that phloxes are sensitive to climate and soil conditions. They require humous, loose soil and above all, plenty of moisture. If their roots suffer from drought, they tend to be susceptible to powdery mildew, so provide them with regular watering and a spot in the sun or light partial shade. For lovers of cut flowers, phlox is a clear choice. We harvest it as soon as about half of the flowers in the inflorescence are open, and it will bring you joy in a vase for up to ten days.

Checkerbloom Brilliant, Loukykvět

Sidalcea

The 'Brilliant' prairie mallow is a charming short-lived perennial that resembles miniature hollyhocks with its flowers and brings a romantic touch to the summer garden. Its homeland is the sunny plains and meadows of North America, so it will also grow best in full sun in your garden. We send customers mature potted seedlings, which simply need to be transplanted into well-drained, loamy, and sufficiently humous soil. Caring for it is very easy and can be effortlessly managed even by beginners. During the summer, it needs regular watering, and the only things you need to watch out for are slugs and the possible appearance of rust on the leaves. However, the plant is highly frost-resistant and will survive the winter without problems down to minus twenty-eight degrees. From June to September, it forms tall, straight stems heavily laden with tiny flowers. These reliably act as a magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, providing them with a rich pasture. An interesting fact is that these flowers are completely safe and even edible, so you can use them to liven up summer salads or desserts. In flowerbeds, the prairie mallow perfectly complements classic combinations with roses, but it also fits perfectly into wilder plantings in the company of ornamental grasses. It grows to a height of around one meter and does not need any support. If you like to decorate your home with fresh flowers, prairie mallow stems are great for cutting and look beautiful in summer bouquets. The 'Brilliant' cultivar stands out especially for its vibrant, richly colored flowers in shades of crimson, which you truly will not miss against the green background of the leaves.

Catmint Six Hills Giant, Loukykvět

Nepeta faassenii

Catmints are ideal companions for roses, suitable for naturalistic gardens, and lower species also for boxes and pots. Some of them are an irresistible attraction for cats, caused by the hallucinogen nepetalactone. This should be present in the highest amount in the species Nepeta cataria. Conversely, lemon-scented catmints reportedly do not attract cats. The botanical name Nepeta likely comes from the name of the ancient Etruscan city Nepet - Nepi in the territory of today's Italian province of Viterbo, where the plant was once cultivated. The faassenii group is characterized by vigorous upright growth, fine foliage, and long stems suitable for cutting. Six Hills Giant has a slightly lighter flower color than Walker's Low. It grows in airy clumps and blooms very profusely. Long stems suitable for cutting.

Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Black Knight, Loukykvět

Delphinium hybrida

The majestic larkspur Benary’s Pacific Black Knight will bring original beauty and a striking vertical structure to your garden. In the wild, the original species of larkspurs grow in lush meadows with nutritious soil. Therefore, in the garden, it will reliably appreciate full sun and sufficiently moist, humous loam. Although it is a perennial for somewhat more advanced growers, with the right approach, it will reward you richly and will survive even extreme winters with temperatures deep below the freezing point without worry. We will deliver a beautifully rooted seedling in a pot, ready for immediate planting in the flowerbed. Do not forget to give it enough space, ideally with spacings around sixty centimeters, and throughout the season, do not forget regular fertilizing. A more airy space will naturally protect the plant from powdery mildew. It works excellently in mixed borders with peonies and roses, providing them with a beautiful dark background. The Black Knight variety stands out with long stems growing up to one hundred and fifty centimeters, which are gradually adorned with deep dark purple flowers from June onwards. These literally attract bees from a wide surrounding area. When growing, keep in mind that it is poisonous and very tasty to slugs in early spring. The firm flower stalks are absolutely ideal for fresh bouquets, where they will stay fresh for about seven days. However, do not place the vase next to ripening fruit, to whose ethylene larkspur is sensitive and would wilt faster. If you want to preserve its beauty longer, try drying it. The dark flowers retain their pigment excellently and will enliven absolutely any dried arrangement.

Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Astolat, Loukykvět

Delphinium hybrida

Larkspur Benary’s Pacific Astolat is an unmissable dominant feature among border perennials and brings classic elegance to the garden. Its original species originate from temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere, where they grow in moister mountain meadows. Therefore, even in our gardens, it will appreciate a location in full sun and deep, nutrient-rich loamy and humous soil with plenty of moisture. You will receive from us an already mature seedling in a pot, which you just need to transplant to the chosen spot. Here it will quickly form a massive clump with deeply lobed green leaves. The Astolat cultivar stands out with firm stems up to a meter and a half tall, which from June carry rich inflorescences of large pink flowers with a contrasting center. During summer, these flowers reliably attract bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. After the first blooming, we recommend cutting the plant back, which will encourage another wave of blooming at the end of summer in August and September. Growing larkspurs requires a bit more attention, so it is better suited for more advanced growers. For them to stand out well and reach their full height, they need to be given enough space; the optimal spacing is around sixty centimeters. Do not forget regular fertilizing and copious watering, because in dry soil they can suffer and be more susceptible to powdery mildew. In spring, it is also important to protect the sprouting shoots from slugs and snails. However, the care invested will pay off richly. We often see them in the company of roses and peonies, with which they form a perfect romantic composition. The entire plant is poisonous, which is good to consider when choosing a planting site. On the other hand, it will please you with its tremendous frost resistance; it can easily handle temperatures dropping down to minus thirty-four degrees. We can fully enjoy their beauty not only in flowerbeds but also in fresh bouquets. For cutting into a vase, choose stems at the time when the bottom flowers are opening. They will last approximately seven days in water, just be careful not to place the vase near ripening fruit. They are sensitive to ethylene, which causes rapid shedding of petals. You can also try drying them for floristic purposes. If you hang the inflorescences in a dark and airy place, the flowers will perfectly retain their rich pink color and serve as an interesting element for winter decorations.

Columbine Kristall, Loukykvět

Aquilegia vulgaris

The common columbine is a versatile perennial that will reliably inhabit both rural and modern flowerbeds. In the wild, it grows on the edges of forests and in light groves across all of Europe, which is why it thrives best in the garden in full sun to partial shade and ordinary loamy soil rich in humus. Its main charm lies in its unusually shaped flowers, but it is also valuable for its very early sprouting green leaves, which awaken the garden after winter. You will receive a beautifully grown seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant to your chosen spot. Although the plant is poisonous, it represents a huge asset for gardeners. Even complete beginners can manage growing it, pests avoid it, and it easily survives severe frosts dropping to minus thirty-four degrees. During May and June, delicate flowers bloom on sturdy, sixty to eighty-centimeter-tall stems, bringing typical airiness and lightness to the planting. The 'Kristall' cultivar is a large-flowered variety that stands out with pure white flowers and prominent spurs. These act as a reliable magnet for bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial pollinators. Keep in mind that in a favorable location, columbine very willingly self-seeds, taking care of natural-looking wild stands. It works well in perennial beds and as an undergrowth beneath taller shrubs. If you like bringing a piece of the garden home, columbine certainly won't disappoint you. It is perfectly suited for cutting and will bring a novel structure to spring bouquets. Fresh flowers will bring you joy in a vase for about seven days. If you leave some of the flowers to finish blooming on the flowerbed, they will form interesting seed pods, which are highly popular among florists for creating various natural decorations and can also be dried well. Just watch out for the occasional occurrence of powdery mildew during the drier months, but otherwise, the plant needs almost no care.

Phlox Sternhimmel, Loukykvět

Phlox paniculata

Phlox, known as 'plamenka' in Czech, is originally a native perennial from the moister meadows and forest edges of North America. It soon achieved great popularity in European gardens and has been systematically bred since the nineteenth century. It is a classic garden perennial that brings a romantic mood and abundant floods of flowers to summer beds. The approximately one meter tall straight stems are adorned with deep green leaves and bear dense inflorescences on top from July to August. The Sternhimmel variety stands out with elegant small flowers with delicate color transitions in light purple and white. At the same time, the whole plant smells very pleasantly, which acts as a reliable magnet for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies from the wide surroundings. Although phlox is very easy to grow and even complete beginners can manage the care, it pays to pay attention to the correct choice of location. We send customers already mature seedlings in a pot, which you can easily transplant directly into the garden. Here, phlox thrives best in a sunny to semi-shady location with loamy, humous, and well-drained soil. It is ideal to keep a spacing of about fifty centimeters when planting so that each clump has enough space to grow. They like plenty of moisture, and stable humidity is important to them. During severe drought, they can react sensitively and be more susceptible to powdery mildew, so they will welcome more abundant watering in the hot summer. Fortunately, you don't have to worry about pests; they avoid it. As for winter, you can throw your worries behind you, because the plant can handle severe frosts down to minus thirty-four degrees. In ornamental beds, phlox stands out both individually in larger groups and in combination with other summer perennials or shorter ornamental grasses. Furthermore, it is an absolutely ideal plant for cutting into vases. It will lend your home not only beautiful pastel colors but also its unmistakable sweet scent. We recommend harvesting stems for bouquets when approximately half of the flowers in the main inflorescence are already fully open. If you provide them with clean water, they will reward you with extraordinary durability and will easily last ten days in a vase.

Oriental Poppy Beauty of Livermere, Loukykvět

Papaver orientale

Oriental poppy Beauty of Livermere brings an unmistakable energy to June flower beds thanks to its giant bowl-shaped flowers. It originally comes from the Caucasus, Turkey, and Iran, where it is at home on rocky slopes and dry meadows. Therefore, it suits full sun and well-drained, loamy soil with medium moisture. We send customers an already grown seedling in a pot, which you just need to transplant straight to the chosen spot at a spacing of fifty centimeters. It is a perennial ideal for beginners, absolutely does not suffer from diseases, and reliably withstands even extreme frosts down to minus forty degrees. The cultivar Beauty of Livermere stands out with a shade sharper red color of the petals than the classic Brilliant variety and reaches a height of around sixty to eighty centimeters. The striking flowers act as a magnet for pollinators. It is typical for Oriental poppies that their strikingly fuzzy green leaves die back after flowering and the plant rests over the summer. New leaves will sprout again at the end of summer. Therefore, we recommend planting other perennials in close proximity that sprout later and cover the empty space. The poppy forms a wonderful spectacle not only in the bed but also in a vase. For use in bouquets, we harvest the stems at the moment when the buds color and slightly crack. The ends of the stems must be seared with a flame for about twenty seconds and immediately placed in cold water, thanks to which the flowers will stay beautiful for four days. The only minor danger to the roots can be the occasional occurrence of the field vole.

It offers an explosion of flowers thanks to unusually rich branching and acts as an irresistible lure for pollinators. From us, you will receive a mature seedling in a pot, which just needs to be transplanted into the flowerbed. The ideal spacing for planting is forty centimeters. It will thrive best in partial shade or on the sun, in well-draining and loamy soil. Although it is a short-lived perennial, even beginners will playfully manage the care. It does not suffer from diseases or pests and survives severe frosts without difficulty. In a suitable place, it reliably self-seeds. Just remember that the entire plant is poisonous. Foxglove is also an excellent choice for cutting into bouquets. The sturdy stems will add height to the vase and will last to bring joy for six to eight days.

Phlox Sweet Summer Sensation, Loukykvět

Phlox paniculata

Phlox, also known as garden phlox, is originally a native perennial of North America. It soon achieved great popularity in European gardens and has been systematically bred since the 19th century. It is a classic perennial for cutting into bouquets, where, in addition to colorful flowers, it also delights with a gentle fragrance. We harvest as soon as roughly half of the flowers in the inflorescence have bloomed; then they last up to 10 days in a vase. Despite efforts to breed the most resistant cultivars possible, it remains true that phlox reacts extremely sensitively to climate and soil conditions, so we pay careful attention to the correct choice of site. The Sweet Summer series includes cultivars bred for greater resistance to fungal diseases. Sweet Summer Sensation has light pink flowers with a darker purplish eye. They contrast beautifully with the dark green leaves.

Cultivation

Rostliny by pak byly náchylnější k houbovým chorobám. Na podzim můžete kolem rostliny rozprostřít centimetr tenkou vrstvu vyzrálého kompostu.

PREVENCE CHOROB

OŠETŘOVÁNÍ A PÉČE

Paeonia

Peonies are valuable in gardens for their large and impressive flowers. They are long-lived perennials for patient gardeners. It takes them several years to grow to full beauty and for you to see rich flowering. Therefore, a blooming Peony right in the first year after planting is more of an exception, certainly not the rule. To flower, it needs proper conditions in addition to time. Study our growing guide. Herbaceous garden Peonies are one of the longest-cultivated garden plants, and most cultivars originate from Chinese and medicinal Peonies, which have long been part of monastery gardens. Today we combine them with perennials, grasses, and bulbs. However, we always give them enough space in the bed. 'Catharina Fontijn' is a traditional Dutch classic in shades of pink. Pay attention to choosing a suitable location; this Peony does not like waterlogged places and will benefit from plenty of sunshine.

Peony Karl Rosenfield, Loukykvět
New

Paeonia

The peony **Karl Rosenfield** is a proven classic that has been grown since 1908. It was bred in the USA and boasts radiantly rich red, double flowers. While the outer petals are large, those in the middle of the flower captivate with their waviness and delicate frilling. The plant does not smell, but stands out with reliability and rich blooming on firm and long stems. These herbaceous peonies, whose ancestors (Chinese and common peonies) already decorated old monastery gardens, are ideal long-lived perennials. However, they require patience – it takes several years before the plant matures into full beauty. Blooming right in the first year after planting is not the rule. For successful growth, it is crucial to ensure the right conditions for the plant according to the cultivation guide and to indulge it with plenty of space in the bed, whether it grows independently, or in combination with grasses and bulbous plants. You can plant potted peonies during the whole season from spring to autumn.

Russian Sage, Loukykvět

Perovskia atriplicifolia

Russian sage reliably brings a touch of sunny steppes into the garden and places almost no demands on care. These sparsely branched subshrubs originally come from harsh, rocky areas from Afghanistan to Tibet, where they grow on open sun-drenched plains. Thanks to its origin, it delights in full sun and poor, well-drained sandy soil with minimal moisture. You will receive from us a well-rooted seedling in a pot, which just needs to be transplanted straight to the chosen spot in the flower bed. It does not need support, is avoided by common pests and diseases, and will survive frosts down to minus twenty-eight degrees. It grows up to one hundred and twenty centimeters and forms striking white felted shoots with silvery grey aromatic leaves. From July to October, it blooms with tiny blue-purple flowers that act as a lure for bees and butterflies and are even edible. Russian sage stands out next to drought-tolerant perennials. The flowers are suitable for cutting and drying for winter arrangements. Moreover, the silvery stems will ensure a beautiful winter effect in the flower bed.

Sea Holly, Loukykvět
For drying

Eryngium planum

Sea holly is an indispensable perennial for all lovers of naturally styled gardens. It earned its folk name - male fidelity - in times when it was used in herbal medicine as an aphrodisiac, and its roots were even candied as sweets in France and England. Today, however, you will appreciate it mainly for its low maintenance and unique appearance. Its home is on sunny hillsides and dry meadows, so even in our gardens, it will welcome well-drained, even poorer sandy soil and full sun. It produces upright, sturdy stems topped with blue-purple flowers with prickly bracts, which bring interesting structure and a silvery touch to the flowerbeds. It is literally a magnetic plant for bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, who find a rich food source on it. Floristically, it is extremely valuable, because its flowers are perfectly suited for cutting as well as drying for winter decorations. If you decide not to harvest it, feel free to leave it in the flowerbed all winter. Its silhouette covered in hoarfrost creates a wonderful winter effect.
