The correct depth is crucial for flowering. Peonies must not be 'drowned'. Plant them so that the eyes (buds) on the root neck are a maximum of 2–3 cm below the soil surface.

Only cut them back to just above the ground and dispose of them in late autumn, once the leaves have dried out or turned brown from the frost.

Yes, peonies are excellent as cut flowers for a vase, where they stay fresh for a long time. 'Bridal Shower', with its white fragrant flowers, is also very popular for wedding bouquets. Conversely, the flowers are not suitable for drying.

The 'Bridal Shower' peony is a fully hardy perennial (zone 4a, down to -34 °C).

• Mature plants: Do not require winter protection.
• Freshly planted: If planting late in the autumn, it is advisable to cover the area with evergreen boughs.
• Spring frosts: Sprouting buds are sensitive to temperatures below -3 °C; if late frosts are expected, cover them with horticultural fleece.

Peonies do not like to be transplanted and can thrive in one spot for decades. If necessary, transplant older plants in the autumn (September–October).

On that occasion, you can divide the clump so that each part has at least 3 to 7 buds and sufficient roots.

For abundant blooming, this peony needs a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.

It can handle partial shade, but it will bloom less. Give it plenty of space (approx. 1 m²) because it does not like root competition from other shrubs, trees, or aggressive perennials.

Peonies love loamy, humus-rich, and well-drained soil that is high in nutrients.

• The soil should retain moderate moisture but must not be waterlogged.
• They will not thrive in heavy or clay soils, as there is a risk of root rot.

In general, peonies are better suited for growing in flower beds because they require sufficient space for their roots and stable conditions. If you must plant a peony in a pot, it should be sufficiently tall and spacious. A container with a volume of at least 30–50 liters is recommended. Adequate drainage holes and a drainage layer are essential. Place the container in a spot where the peony will get at least 6 hours of sun per day and is protected from the wind. Avoid moving the plant unnecessarily.

Peonies are generally hardy and are rarely troubled by pests.

The most common issue is the fungal disease grey mold (Botrytis), which attacks buds or leaves, especially in damp weather or when plants are crowded. Prevention involves providing sufficient spacing between plants (for air circulation) and removing infected parts (do not put them in the compost!).
