Growing the 'Salmon Runner' variety is suitable even for complete beginners. This beauty thrives in a sunny location with well-drained and humus-rich soil. Plant the tubers directly in the flowerbed from mid-May to June, once the danger of ground frost has passed. Place the tuber at a depth of 10–15 cm, place it horizontally with the eye facing up, and cover with soil so that there is about 5 cm of soil above the crown. For optimal growth, maintain a spacing of 30–50 cm (roughly 1 to 4 plants per square meter). If you want to enjoy the rich coral flowers as soon as possible, you can pre-cultivate the tubers starting from March in a pot in a bright place protected from frost.
The plant reaches an impressive height of 80–160 cm, so it is absolutely essential to provide firm support in time to prevent the stems from breaking due to wind or the weight of the full flowers. An important step for rich branching is pinching – as soon as the plant has a few pairs of true leaves, remove the apical shoot. Dahlias like moderate watering but do not tolerate waterlogging. For lush growth, start fertilizing after planting with a product with a higher nitrogen content (e.g., pelleted poultry manure or Kristalon Start). As soon as the first buds appear, switch to a fertilizer with a predominance of potassium, which will support the formation of large flowers and strengthen the root system. Also, regularly remove faded flowers, which will extend the flowering until late autumn.
This variety is excellent for cutting, but it is necessary to harvest it at the right time. Cut the flowers when they are three-quarters open, and always check the back of the petals – they must be firm and lush. After cutting, dahlias do not open much in a vase. To extend their lifespan to about one week, submerge the ends of the stems in hot water (70–80 °C) for at least 15 minutes immediately after cutting. Watch out for slugs and snails, which like to destroy young shoots, as well as thrips or mosaic virus (manifested by leaf spotting). With the first autumn frost that burns the leaves, cut off the above-ground part and carefully dig up the tubers. After cleaning, store them in a cool, dark, and dry place. In the spring, you can then easily propagate them by dividing larger clumps or by taking cuttings from sprouted tubers.
