Gypsophila paniculata, or baby's breath, will bring a white mist effect to your flower beds, which beautifully softens the sharper contours of other perennials. This robust plant, native to the European and Asian steppes, is a master of survival in sunny and dry locations. Its grey-green leaves and stems form an interesting contrast to the bright white flowers that appear from July to September. In garden architecture, it is popularly used to fill empty spaces between more prominent flowers or roses, keeping them inconspicuous yet important company.
Cultivation is suitable even for complete beginners, because the plant does not suffer from pests or diseases and is very frost-resistant. In a sunny spot with well-drained loamy soil, they quickly grow into abundant clumps. For ideal growth, we recommend maintaining a spacing of about fifty centimeters, which corresponds to roughly four to six plants per square meter. They will easily handle even severe frosts dropping down to minus twenty-eight degrees.
From August to October, it produces upright stems fifty to a hundred centimeters tall that carry rich inflorescences. Při výběru místa pro šater latnatý myslete především na to, že tato rostlina miluje slunce a doslova nesnáší stín či těžké, mokré půdy. Ideálním stanovištěm je jižně orientovaný záhon, kam se po celý den opírají sluneční paprsky. Půda musí být výrazně propustná, spíše sušší, hlinitá až písčitá a bohatá na vápník. Pokud máte na zahradě těžkou jílovitou zeminu, je nezbytné před výsadbou vykopat hlubší jámu a na dno umístit silnou drenážní vrstvu ze štěrku nebo kamínků, případně zeminu vylehčit velkým množstvím písku. Rostlina tvoří velmi hluboký kůlový kořen, díky kterému si dokáže sáhnout pro vláhu hluboko do podloží, což z ní činí přeborníka v odolnosti vůči suchu, ale zároveň to znamená, že špatně snáší přesazování. Sazenici proto sázejte rovnou na finální místo.
Samotná výsadba sazenice je jednoduchá, ale je třeba dodržet dostatečný rozestup. Šater je statná rostlina, která se rozrůstá do šířky, proto dodržujte spon alespoň 80 až 100 cm. Vzhledem k tomu, že rostlina koření hluboko, nepotřebuje po zakořenění téměř žádnou doplňkovou zálivku, zalévejte ji pouze v období extrémního dlouhotrvajícího sucha. Přemokření je pro šater mnohem nebezpečnější než sucho, protože může vést k uhnívání kořenového krčku. Co se týče výživy, rostlina je nenáročná a v běžné zahradní zemině nevyžaduje pravidelné hnojení. Pokud chcete podpořit růst, můžete na jaře přidat trochu kompostu nebo hnojiva s obsahem vápníku, ale vyhněte se hnojivům s vysokým obsahem dusíku, která by způsobila bujný růst listů na úkor kvetení a pevnosti stonků.
Velkou výhodou šateru je jeho vynikající zdraví; rostlina prakticky netrpí na škůdce ani choroby, takže se nemusíte bát napadení mšicemi nebo padlím. Je také plně mrazuvzdorná až do -34 °C a naši zimu zvládá bez problémů bez jakékoliv ochrany, pokud nestojí v podmáčené půdě. Údržba během roku spočívá v podstatě jen v odstraňování odkvetlých stonků, pokud je nepoužijete k řezu. Na jaře pak odstraňte suché nadzemní části těsně nad zemí, aby měla rostlina prostor pro nové výhony. Květenství jsou nádherná do čerstvých kytic, ale i na sušení – pro sušení řežte stonky v době plného květu a zavěste je květy dolů na tmavém a vzdušném místě. Při manipulaci s rostlinou buďte opatrní a používejte raději rukavice, protože šťáva z rostliny může dráždit pokožku a celá rostlina je při požití jedovatá.
Pěstování v nádobách je u šateru možné, ale má svá specifika kvůli mohutnému kořenovému systému. Pokud se rozhodnete pro pěstování na balkoně či terase, musíte zvolit opravdu hluboký a velký květináč, aby měl kůlový kořen kam růst. Nádoba musí mít na dně kvalitní drenážní vrstvu a otvory pro odtok vody, aby kořeny nestály ve vlhku. Substrát namíchejte s pískem v poměru 1:1 pro zajištění maximální propustnosti. Mějte na paměti, že v nádobě substrát promrzá rychleji než ve volné půdě, a i když je šater mrazuvzdorný, v květináči může být jeho kořenový systém náchylnější k poškození mrazem, proto je vhodné nádobu na zimu obalit jutou nebo polystyrenem.
