Perennial of the Season 2026

Sanguisorba officinalis

The 'Lum' burnet is a compact and abundantly flowering cultivar bred in the Netherlands, which, thanks to its lower stature, is perfectly suited even for the foreground of perennial beds. The original botanical species is a typical meadow plant of our moist meadows, where it forms dense clumps of dark green pinnate leaves. In the middle of summer, branched stems grow from them, topped with tiny, dark burgundy heads that gently sway in the breeze. This perennial is vital for the rare dusky large blue butterfly, which it will reliably attract to your garden as well. In naturally styled plantings, combined with ornamental grasses, it creates an airy and light effect while requiring no support. Furthermore, the inflorescences are excellent material for florists, adding an unusual texture and color accent to bouquets. They last fresh in a vase for seven to ten days.

Sanguisorba tenuifolia

Sanguisorba 'Pieters' is an elegant perennial originating from the damp meadows and edges of light forests in Korea and Japan. Despite its respectable height of up to 150 cm, it looks airy and light in flowerbeds, making it an ideal companion for nature-inspired plantings, especially in combination with ornamental grasses. Characteristic for it are the elegantly drooping cylindrical inflorescences that gently sway in the wind. The 'Pieters' variety stands out with its upright growth and striking maroon-red flowers that appear from August to October. For florists, this burnet is a valuable material because it adds the necessary structure and lightness to bouquets. It stays fresh in a vase for seven to ten days and is also suitable for drying.

Perennial of the Season 2026

Sanguisorba

Sanguisorba Korean Snow is an impressive perennial originating from the moist meadows and edges of light forests in Korea and Japan. Despite its respectable height, which can reach up to 180 centimeters, it creates an unusually airy and delicate impression in the garden. Its elegantly drooping cylindrical inflorescences in pure white color sway gently in the breeze and thus create a dynamic element in any planting. The fresh green, finely lobed leaves additionally give the plant an interesting texture even before it actually blooms. In the garden, it finds its place primarily in the background of perennial beds or in naturally styled compositions, where, in combination with ornamental grasses, it creates a relaxed and light effect. For florists, this Sanguisorba is a valuable material, because it adds much-desired lightness, volume, and a vertical line to bouquets. It stays fresh in a vase for seven to ten days, making it a reliable cut flower. Growing it is easy, and the plant does not suffer from diseases or pests. Although it can manage to grow in partial shade, full sun will guarantee a firmer and more upright growth, thanks to which it will not stretch for light. It loves loamy to clayey soils that hold moisture well, exactly like the ones it knows from its Asian homeland.
