Red valerian

Red valerian is a tireless-blooming perennial originally from the sunny Mediterranean. It naturally thrives on dry slopes, making it a completely undemanding plant. In your garden, it will do best in full sun in well-drained loamy or sandy soil. It can even handle drier, poorer spots, so it is a great choice for sunny flowerbeds, where it will also attract plenty of pollinators. Its tiny flowers somewhat resemble oregano and are carried on succulent stems. For us, it is a very popular filler for cut flower bouquets. Its airy appearance nicely complements more striking flowers and it looks great in a vase for quite a long time. You can plant your flowerbed with pre-grown seedlings, but red valerian can also be grown easily from seeds. If you decide to start from scratch, you will definitely find our guide on how to sow and care for young plants useful.

Red Valerian Rosato Rose Pink, Loukykvět

Centranthus ruber

The 'Rosato Rose Pink' valerian is a richly flowering perennial whose original homeland is the sunny and warm Mediterranean. It grows there on rocky slopes, and therefore, even in your garden, it will appreciate rather poorer, well-drained sandy or loamy soil in direct sun. The seedling you receive from us in a pot simply needs to be transplanted into the flowerbed, where it will quickly form an airy bush with gray-green leaves up to one meter tall. It is completely undemanding, does not need support, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and can handle frosts down to minus twenty-three degrees. Although it belongs among short-lived perennials, it reliably self-seeds in a suitable location. Among perennials, valerian has an unrivaled longest blooming period. From May to September, it forms convex panicles full of tiny, fragrant florets in a vibrant raspberry pink shade, which are an attraction for bees and butterflies. It fits perfectly into drought-tolerant plantings. For bouquets, we cut sturdy stems with freshly bloomed panicles, which will last around seven days in a vase.

Red Valerian Pretty Betsy Red, Loukykvět

Centranthus ruber

The crimson red flowers of valerian will brighten up any sunny garden and reliably attract plenty of pollinators. This airy perennial has its origins in the Mediterranean region, where it decorates warm, sunny slopes and dry places. Thanks to this, it is completely undemanding, and in your garden, it will do best in full sun with well-drained, sandy, or loamy soil. The striking red shade of the 'Pretty Betsy Red' variety is complemented by gray-green leaves. Valerian holds one amazing record, as it offers the longest blooming period of all perennials. From early summer until early autumn, it constantly adorns itself with tiny edible florets clustered in convex panicles. Even complete beginners can easily manage its care. Pests and diseases avoid the plant, and it easily handles severe frosts. Even though it grows as a short-lived plant, it willingly self-seeds. In compositions, it looks excellent next to delicate grasses. Its blooming stems are a great attraction for bees and butterflies, and hummingbird hawk-moths often feast on them as well. Valerian flowers perfectly liven up summer bouquets. For the vase, cut the stems just before they unfurl or when freshly opened; they will last about a week at home.

Red Valerian Snowcloud White, Loukykvět

Centranthus ruber

An unrivaled long flowering period and absolute low maintenance make valerian a plant that every grower will appreciate in their flowerbed. Valerian originates from the sunny Mediterranean, where it naturally colonizes dry and rocky places. In our country, therefore, it will most welcome full sun and well-drained loamy or sandy soil, in which it will easily survive even severe frosts below minus twenty degrees. We will deliver a fully grown seedling straight in a pot, from which a compact, airy bush around fifty centimeters to one meter tall will quickly grow after transplanting. The 'Snowcloud White' variety blooms purely white from spring to the first autumn days, and its fragrant flowers are a literal magnet for beneficial insects. The plant does not require support, pests avoid it, and it easily self-seeds, thereby compensating for its shorter lifespan. Its airy structure makes it an excellent addition to summer bouquets. Flowers harvested in the bud stage will stay fresh in a vase for about a week. Moreover, both flowers and leaves are completely edible, so you can use them to spice up cold summer dishes.
