Této mimořádně nenáročné trvalce se bude zaručeně nejlépe dařit na teplém, prosluněném místě. Nemá ráda přemokření. Naopak snese sucho, vyhovuje jí propustná písčitá a kamenitá půda na slunci. Dokáže růst v suchých zídkách, kde jí neohrožuje přílišné zimní vlhko. Sazenice sázejte na vzdálenost zhruba 45 centimetrů, což odpovídá zhruba 4 až 6 rostlinám na metr čtvereční, aby měly dostatek životního prostoru pro svůj přirozený růst do finální výšky 50 až 100 centimetrů. Zajistíte jim tak dobrou cirkulaci vzduchu, která je velmi prospěšná pro celkovou vitalitu a zdraví rostliny.
Jakmile se rostlina po výsadbě na svém novém místě spolehlivě ujme a zakoření, stává se z ní skutečný mistr v přežití na suchu. Zálivku vyžaduje pouze minimální a skvěle si dokáže poradit i s úpornými letními vedry, kdy jiné trvalky již ztrácejí svou svěžest. Ani s hnojením si opravdu nemusíte lámat hlavu, protože mavuň přirozeně a ráda roste i v poměrně chudých půdách. Zbytečný nadbytek živin z umělých hnojiv by jí spíše uškodil a vedl k vytáhlému a křehkému růstu. Co se týče obávaných škůdců a zahradních chorob, můžete zůstat naprosto v klidu. Této aromatické rostlině se škůdci i nemoci obloukem vyhýbají, takže vám zcela odpadá jakákoliv nutnost používat chemické postřiky nebo jiné ochranné prostředky.
Tím vůbec nejdůležitějším krokem v péči o mavuň je správně načasovaný letní řez. Mezi trvalkami má bezkonkurenčně nejdelší dobu kvetení. Její úchvatné karmínové květy se objevují nepřetržitě od června až do září. Hojně se přesévá, takže pokud nestojíte o záhony plné mavuní, seřízněte rostliny hned po odkvětu. Seříznutím podpoříte zároveň násadu nových kvítků. Tímto šetrným zpětným řezem nejen včas zabráníte nechtěnému šíření semínek po zahradě, ale udržíte tuto krátkověkou trvalku mnohem vitálnější a atraktivnější po celou dobu letní sezóny. Její kvetoucí laty navíc můžete stříhat i do vázy, kde vydrží dlouho čerstvé, a tím rostlinu průběžně a přirozeně zmlazujete.
Pokud nedisponujete vlastní zahradou, nezoufejte, mavuň můžete poměrně snadno pěstovat i v prostorné nádobě nebo hlubším truhlíku na slunném balkoně či terase. Při pěstování v květináči je však naprosto klíčové zajistit perfektní drenážní vrstvu na samém dně a běžný substrát výrazně odlehčit smícháním s větším podílem hrubšího písku nebo jemného štěrku. Co se týče přezimování, mrazuvzdornost této rostliny je vynikající a na záhoně spolehlivě zvládá teploty až do -23 °C. U rostlin v nádobách ovšem nezapomeňte květináč na zimu přesunout pod stříšku a chránit jej před nadměrnými srážkami. Kořeny nesmí v chladném období uhnít vlivem dlouhodobého zimního přemokření, samotný mráz jim neublíží.

This species of sage originally comes from the steppe regions of Central and Eastern Europe. It forms profusely flowering small clumps with straight upright stems. In flower beds, it looks best in groups. Traditionally, due to the identical flowering time, it is planted as a companion to roses. However, it will look just as good in mixed drought-loving steppe plantings with grasses. It lasts 7 days in a vase. The cultivar Caradonna stands out with a long flowering period and dark, almost black-purple stems with tiny purple flowers and dark purple bracts. If we cut it back after flowering, it will bloom again in late August and September.
