Safflower

Safflower is exactly the kind of plant you will fall in love with from your very first harvest. Even though its flowers resemble a prickly thistle, its stems are beautifully straight and woody. This makes it excellent to work with, and it lasts for a long time in a vase. You can use it in arrangements in a few different ways. It looks great even as an unopened bud, acting as a neutral green filler. Once it blooms into rich colors, it will brighten up any bouquet. It is also a fantastic plant for drying. Simply hang it upside down after harvesting in a dry, well-ventilated place away from direct sunlight. You can easily grow it from seeds in full sun. If you are just starting with growing annuals, we recommend checking out our direct sowing guide or reading our more general tips on how to sow, so your plants bring you nothing but joy all summer long.

Safflower White Grenade, Loukykvět

Carthamus tinctorius

Safflower in creamy white? A cut flower you simply must have! We tried it for the first time this year and it is a great piece. The stems are firm, strong, and woody. They grow beautifully straight and are wonderful to arrange with. Safflower can also be used unbloomed in the form of buds, like neutral green thistles. The flowers are prickly, but the stems and leaves are not, so it doesn't bother you when cleaning the material and arranging. Well, one could talk about Safflower for a long time, it's simply a perfect piece. For drying, we harvest fully colored buds. Just hang them upside down in a dry and ventilated place, out of direct sunlight.
