Verbascum hybrida
Mullein is a classic cottage garden perennial that brings vertical structure and delicate beauty to gardens. The native species of this plant naturally grow in sunny and dry habitats, often on stony or sandy soils with a lower nutrient content. Thanks to its origin, it is extremely drought-resistant and thrives in full sun in well-draining soil. It is a short-lived perennial that does not require complex care, making it an ideal choice even for beginner growers. In flowerbeds, it works perfectly as a vertical dominant, even though this cultivar reaches a more compact height of thirty to fifty centimeters. It combines wonderfully with shorter drought-tolerant grasses or other perennials, making great company for them. Moreover, the flowers reliably attract bees, bumblebees, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the summer. They are not susceptible to pests or diseases, and interestingly, they are even edible. The flower stalks are sturdy and do not need support, which you will appreciate not only in the bed but also when cutting for summer bouquets. Although it is not suitable for drying, it can make a great show in a vase. The Sugar Plum cultivar stands out with its grayish-green leaves and above all an irresistible shade of flowers. From June to August, it blooms with a deep purple color, whose tones resemble ripe plums and give the garden an elegant and unusual look. Simply transplant the grown seedling to a sunny spot and enjoy its beauty.
