Eupatorium purpureum

Are you looking for a striking and reliable perennial for your garden? Joe-Pye weed catches the eye at first glance with a height of up to two meters and purplish-pink blooming. In its homeland in North American nature, it mainly inhabits moist meadows, which is why it will thrive best here in the sun in moister humus, loamy, or clayey soil. A healthy seedling in a pot will arrive at your home, which just needs to be transplanted. After planting, it soon forms a massive clump of dark green leaves. In midsummer, it then blooms with large aromatic inflorescences that literally buzz under the onslaught of bees and butterflies. The plant is completely undemanding, does not suffer from diseases or pests, and easily survives even very severe frosts. It works wonderfully in the back lines of flower beds, where it is planted with one-meter spacing, or as a mature solitary plant. The inflorescences hold their shape, so you can cut them into summer bouquets. In winter, on the other hand, the dry structure of the plant beautifully catches snow and frost. In short, it is an ideal choice for beginners, which you will enjoy for decades.

Eupatorium hybridum

Creamy white inflorescences and tremendous hardiness make the Snowball Joe-Pye weed a plant that you simply will not overlook in the garden. The original species grow in moist North American prairies and are adapted to diverse conditions, which makes them exceptionally reliable perennials. From us, you will get a mature seedling right in a pot, which you can conveniently transplant directly into the flowerbed. You will make it the happiest in the sun or partial shade, where it has plenty of moisture available. It will thrive in humous, loamy, and slightly compacted clayey soil. Once Joe-Pye weed takes root, it will last in its place for decades and requires almost no care, so even beginners can manage growing it without any problems. Furthermore, diseases and pests steer clear of it. The Snowball variety boasts firm architecture and a height of slightly over one meter. Behind its discovery stands the renowned Piet Oudolf, who introduced it in 2013. During summer and early autumn, fragrant, wide inflorescences hover above the dark green leaves. This flood of flowers literally buzzes with life, as it represents a rich source of nectar for butterflies and bees. In garden compositions, Joe-Pye weed forms a beautiful solitary dominant feature, but you can also easily incorporate it into natural perennial plantings. If you like creating arrangements, definitely try using Joe-Pye weed in a vase. Its thick stems and rich flowers will add volume to fresh bouquets, and at the same time, they can be dried very well for autumn floristic creations.

Eupatorium maculatum

The original wild species of this Joe-Pye weed grows in the wet meadows of southern parts of Canada and the northern USA. It is a sturdy, long-lived, and reliable perennial that can easily last several decades in the garden. You will receive a mature seedling in a pot from us, which you just need to transplant directly into the flowerbed. It thrives in the sun or partial shade and prefers humous, loamy to clayey soil with plenty of moisture. It does not suffer from diseases or pests and can handle frosts down to minus thirty-four degrees, so even beginners can easily grow it. The Purple Bush variety was bred by landscape architect Piet Oudolf as a more compact version of this otherwise very tall species. It grows to a meter and a half, forms a dense clump of firm dark green leaves, and has striking maroon-red stems. From July to September, it bears large, airy inflorescences in pink and purple tones. The flowers are fragrant and act as a magnet for bees and butterflies. Joe-Pye weed looks great as a prominent specimen plant or in the background of perennial borders. It is suitable for cutting into summer vases, and you can also use it for autumn drying into floristic decorations.
