Perennial Collection with Ornamental Grasses and Bulbs

A collection of taller plants intended for semi-shaded beds with good soil. It will suit gardens with a forest atmosphere, where the sun shines for part of the day but does not dry out the soil or plants. Ideally, it should be a place protected from drying winds with the possibility of watering. The collection contains plants that appreciate a cooler and more humid environment, making them well-suited for planting in beds on the north and east sides of the house. In our selection, we focused on a shapely, diverse combination of flowers; we present it in a neutral white-green palette, leaving the colors intentionally up to you, as many options are available here. Tender bowl-shaped anemone flowers will contrast beautifully with the slender inflorescence of knotweed (Persicaria), and you can also use red-colored cultivars. Small spring flowers will be provided by brunnera and, immediately after, by astilbe. These two perennials belong to the group that enchants in the garden not only with their flowers; their leaves, again in a shapely contrasting combination, will also attract attention. A reliable foundation in the form of a cloud of star-shaped florets will be provided by aster, and the role of a striking solitaire will be played by black cohosh (Cimicifuga). Its dark leaves contrasting with white flowers will be unmistakable. A structural contrast is also provided by the pair of grasses we chose: tufted hair grass (Deschampsia) with fluffy, delicate flowers, and the taller fescue (or similar grass) with its characteristic elegantly drooping inflorescence and magical autumn color change. Bulbs, ideally bluebells and three-cornered leek, can also be utilized. Empty spaces in a freshly established bed can be filled with flowering tobacco plants, which also handle partial shade. You can pre-grow them from seeds and choose from several cultivars. When planning, count on an average of six to seven perennials per m², depending on the soil quality in your garden and your intentions. In nutritious and sufficiently moist soil, perennials will grow faster and the distances between them can be larger to start with; in poorer conditions, it will be better to plant them more densely. The time you can dedicate to bed maintenance will also be a deciding factor.
With our collection, you can work creatively and adapt it to your needs and your garden. In the basket, you can easily adjust plant counts and choose appropriate species and cultivar substitutes. For example, if you are already growing some of the perennials in this collection and only need to supplement your bed, you can keep only the selected perennials in your basket. When shopping in autumn, you can take advantage of available bulbs and order the complete collection, including spring bulbs and alliums, which will ensure your bed has plenty of flowers in both spring and summer.

Tufted Hairgrass Goldschleier
Tufted hairgrass is an undemanding native grass that remains green even in winter. In nature, it grows in meadows and forest clearings. It forms a compact tuft of leaves, from which grow fine, thin stems with transparent clouds of flowers. It adapts even to more difficult conditions, such as dry shade or compacted soil, and can handle waterlogging. Goldschleier has very tiny spikelets in light yellow panicles. The inflorescence forms a fluffy light yellow cloud above the tuft of leaves.

Anemones come from the same family as buttercups. With their elegant flowers on long slender stems, they can enliven and brighten up late summer and autumn flowerbeds. They stand out against the darker background of shrub groups and will also appreciate their partial shade. The Czech Perennial Association chose autumn anemones as the perennial of the season for 2022. They last 7 days in a vase. Andrea Atkinson is a tender cultivar of autumn anemone with white petals.

Persicaria Alba
This species of knotweed originates from the Himalayas and China, where it grows in scrub and on mountain meadows along streams at high altitudes. It forms sturdy clumps of fresh green, pointed leaves. Above them, upright, narrow, candle-like inflorescences composed of individual tiny flowers appear from summer onwards. It is a very popular perennial, recently bred into many cultivars and used in Western Europe in larger park and garden landscaping. It excels with a long flowering period in late summer and good durability in a vase. It was voted Perennial of the Season 2023 by the Czech Perennials Association. The white variety Alba stands out particularly well against a darker background and has long-lasting flowers.

Northern Sea Oats
Chasmanthium is one of the most charming ornamental grasses, bringing movement and a gentle rustling sound to the garden. It originates from the eastern part of North America, where it naturally grows in light, damp forests or on the banks of streams, so it is best suited to partial shade and humous, non-drying soil. Its greatest adornments are the flat spikelets resembling small fish, which hang from arched, drooping stems and change color throughout the season from fresh green through beige to warm copper tones, while the leaves turn golden-yellow in autumn. Chasmanthium is an excellent choice for cutting into fresh bouquets, where it adds airiness, and it looks even better dried, retaining its shape and color for a long time. Furthermore, it is a fully frost-hardy perennial that easily handles winters and will please any grower with its low-maintenance nature.

The Spanish Bluebell is a beautiful bulbous plant native to southwestern Europe, where it grows in light deciduous forests. Multiple leaves grow from the bulb, but only one flower stalk. The plant propagates well on its own in the right location via daughter bulbs and seeds, creating colonies. It blooms from May to June. The leaves die back soon after flowering. For the longest vase life, it is best to harvest them just before the florets open. Then they last up to 14 days in a vase.

Brunnera sibirica
Siberian Bugloss
Siberian bugloss is a hardy perennial that is unfazed even by the shady corners of the garden where other plants fail to thrive. It earned its name thanks to its tiny blue flowers, which are very similar to classic forget-me-nots and bloom in April and May. Unlike its more famous relative, the largeleaf bugloss, this species spreads a bit more vigorously and forms dense stands. Thanks to its underground rhizomes, it works as a great groundcover plant that reliably suppresses weeds under trees or shrubs. Once the plant finishes blooming, all its energy moves into the large, deep green heart-shaped leaves, which quickly grow to their final size. It is an ideal choice for beginners because it handles heavier clay soils excellently and tolerates short-term drought. Furthermore, the flowers are suitable for cutting into spring tied bouquets, where they look very tender and add lightness to the arrangement.

Delicate decorative, long-lived shade-loving perennials with pinnate leaves and magnificent feathery inflorescences. They originate primarily from East Asia, but also from eastern North America. They look best in large-scale plantings. Due to relatively late sprouting, it is good to combine them with early-flowering bulbs. They last 4–10 days in a vase. We harvest as soon as half of the inflorescence is in bloom. They are very sensitive to ethylene released from ripening fruit. Washington has white flowers.

Three-cornered Leek
Allium triquetrum represents the perfect combination of a charming spring flower and a useful culinary herb. It blooms during May and June on sturdy stems thirty to forty centimeters high, bearing pure white bell-shaped flowers. Each petal is decorated with a characteristic delicate green stripe. It got its name from the unusual triangular cross-section of its stems. Along with its flat, strap-like leaves and typical garlic aroma, this is a reliable guide to safely distinguish it from the inedible bluebell. The flowers act as an irresistible magnet for bees, bumblebees, and other pollinators. In the garden, it will thrive in sunny spots as well as light shade. The Beth Chatto variety brings the wild beauty of North American forests into Czech gardens. The White wood aster is at home in shady clearings and along the edges of forest stands, making it an ideal plant for more demanding shady and partially shaded areas. It excellently tolerates the competition of large tree roots, under which it forms rich and exceptionally airy clumps. We will deliver a strong seedling in a pot to you, so after transplanting it into well-draining soil, you immediately get a solid foundation for a new bed. The entire care is absolutely undemanding; you won't have to fight any pests or diseases, and this perennial will survive the winter without batting an eye. The main peculiarity of this variety are its very thin, sturdy, and distinctly reddish stems. Bugbane Black Negligee
Bugbane 'Black Negligee' is a charming and very long-lived perennial that will bring an interesting play of colors and textures to the shady corners of the garden. In its original homeland, it grows on the edges of forests and in the undergrowth of East Asia, so it thrives best in partial to full shade and in moist, loamy soil rich in humus. From the delivered grown seedling in a pot, after transplanting to a flower bed, a robust plant reaching well over a meter in height will grow. It captivates mainly with its striking dark brownish-burgundy leaves, which form a perfect contrast for other shade-loving species. In spring, bugbane needs plenty of time to sprout into its full beauty, so we recommend combining it with spring bulbs such as snowdrops or daffodils. From August to September, tall stems with clusters of tiny white flowers grow from the dark clumps, which smell pleasantly and reliably attract bees and other pollinators. It is an undemanding plant for beginners, which does not suffer from diseases or pests and easily handles severe frosts. The inflorescences are perfect for cutting into bouquets, where their fine texture stands out. Just remember that the entire plant is poisonous.
