Three-cornered garlic is a low-maintenance perennial bulb that will look beautiful in your spring garden and can also be fully utilized in the kitchen. As soon as you receive healthy bulbs from us, it is ideal to plant them in the soil as soon as possible. If you must delay planting for a few days, we recommend storing the bulbs in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated dark place so that they do not start sprouting prematurely or dry out. For successful growth, choose a suitable location—depending on moisture conditions, it will thrive in the sun but also handles light semi-shade excellently. This garlic needs moist, humus-rich soil and a partially shaded location, similar to wild garlic. The soil should ideally be loamy and sufficiently permeable. Permeability is key to ensure that standing water does not collect around the bulbs, preventing them from rotting during damp winter months.
The planting of the bulbs itself takes place during the autumn and early winter months. Specifically, this is the period from the beginning of September until December, provided that the soil is not deeply frozen. Carefully plant the bulbs at a depth of 5 to 10 centimeters with the tip pointing upwards. To create a visually rich and dense display, we recommend maintaining a spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters between individual bulbs during planting. In practice, this means using roughly 25 to 50 bulbs per square meter, depending on the desired density. Immediately after autumn planting, it is appropriate to water the area slightly so that the soil settles around the bulbs. Three-cornered garlic generally likes moderate watering. Therefore, ensure that the soil does not dry out completely during the peak growth period in the spring, while also avoiding permanent, unhealthy waterlogging.
During the spring growing season, this plant requires virtually no complicated care and can be handled easily even by a complete gardening beginner. A huge advantage for every grower is the fact that this species does not suffer from any common fungal diseases and is reliably avoided by all typical garden pests. With the arrival of the warm summer, when the plant successfully finishes flowering, its above-ground part naturally goes deep into the ground, where the bulbs rest. In this summer resting phase, they require absolutely no supplemental watering. With the onset of winter, the bulbs survive in the ground without any problems. They are fully frost-hardy down to severe frosts of around -18 °C and do not need any special winterization, covering with branches, or mulching. Over time, the plant willingly spreads and thickens in its location. If the stand becomes too dense after a few years, it can be easily propagated by dividing the clumps.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
