Growing the Foxtrot tulip is suitable even for complete beginners; you only need to follow a few basic rules, and the plant will reward you with magnificent flowers. Location and soil: For successful growth, plant the bulbs in a bright sunny or slightly shaded spot. Ideal for them is high-quality humus-rich, loamy, and above all, well-drained soil. Proper permeability of the substrate is absolutely crucial. Watering should be rather moderate. Usually, natural moisture from rain is plenty for the plant; only in case of prolonged and extreme drought during spring growth should you water it very lightly at the roots.
Planting and protection: If you are not going to plant the bulbs immediately into the bed, keep them in a dark, dry, and cool place so they do not start sprouting prematurely. Place them in the outdoor bed during the autumn months, optimally in September, October, or at the latest in November, before the soil is frozen. Plant them at a depth of 10 to 15 cm and maintain spacing of 10 to 15 cm from each other. In practice, this means planting approximately 60 to 80 bulbs per square meter. Given that common voles like to feast on tulips, it is very practical to plant the bulbs in special plastic planting baskets, which will safely protect them underground.
Care and wintering: During the main spring growth and flowering in April and May, these 30 to 40 cm tall tulips do not require any artificial support or complex pinching. They have strong stems and work great for cutting into a vase, where they stay fresh for a long time and smell beautiful. After full flowering, remove only the top flower head to prevent seed formation. However, let the green leaves naturally turn yellow and dry out in the bed. Thanks to this process, the bulb draws back all the important nutrients needed for rich flowering in the next season. The bulbs remain safely in the soil for the winter. This species is frost-resistant down to an extreme -40 °C, so it will survive even the harshest winter months without any problems or the need for covering.
