Growing the tulip 'Foxy Foxtrot' is ideal even for complete beginners due to its low maintenance. It thrives best in a sunny location or partial shade. The selection of the right soil is crucial, which must be well-drained. Waterlogging does not suit the bulbs and could lead to the development of fungal diseases, such as Fusarium or gray mold. Before planting, keep the bulbs in a dry, cool, and dark place so they do not start sprouting prematurely. Given that these bulbs attract field voles, we recommend considering planting in special plastic bulb baskets, which will reliably protect them from these pests.
Planting takes place in the autumn, ideally from September to November, until the soil freezes. Plant the beautiful and large bulbs to a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. The spacing between individual plants should be in the range of 5 to 15 centimeters, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 70 pieces per square meter. During spring growth and flowering, tulips require only moderate watering; the soil should be slightly moist but never permanently wet. The stems reaching a height of 30 to 45 centimeters are naturally sturdy and require no support.
After flowering in April and May, it is important not to remove the green leaves too early. The plant draws nutrients from them back into the bulb for the next season. However, you can safely cut off the flower stems after the petals fall. This cultivar is extremely frost-hardy down to -40 °C, so the bulbs will easily survive the winter directly in the bed. As this is a short-lived perennial, to maintain rich flowering, it is often recommended to remove the bulbs from the soil in summer after the leaves die back, store them in a dry place, and replant them in the autumn. Always disinfect gardening shears when performing care to prevent the transmission of the mosaic virus.
