Even a complete beginner can handle growing the 'Gudoshnik Double' tulip with ease, as it requires no complex procedures. These bulbs thrive best in a sunny spot or light partial shade, where they will have enough light for the development of their giant flowers. The correct choice of soil is crucial for them; it should be loamy, rich in humus, and, above all, well-draining. If you have rather heavy clay soil in your garden, we recommend improving it with coarser sand before planting. This will ensure that excess water does not linger by the bulbs and will prevent feared fungal diseases like Fusarium rot or grey mold.
Planting itself takes place exclusively in autumn; the ideal period is during the months of September, October, and November, before the soil freezes permanently.
Depth and orientation: Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters, always with the tip facing upward.
Proper spacing: For a rich carpet of flowers, maintain a spacing of 10 to 15 cm, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 70 plants per square meter.
Protection against pests: Since the bulbs are a great attraction for field voles, it is worth planting them in plastic or wire baskets.
Storage: If you are not planting immediately, store them in a dry and cool place.
During the spring blooming, which occurs in April and May, keep the bed evenly, yet only moderately moist. The variety produces stable stems 30 to 45 centimeters high; it does not need to be grown with support or pinched in any way. Furthermore, its double flowers are fragrant and have excellent vase life after harvest. After blooming, it is necessary to let all the leaves naturally turn yellow and dry out so the bulb can draw back important nutrients for the next year. The plant is frost-hardy down to -40 °C, so it does not need winter covering.
