Growing the 'Double Princess' cultivar is a huge joy and can be easily handled even by a total beginner who is just starting with bulbous plants. These beautiful plants thrive best in a warm and sunny location, but they will tolerate light spring partial shade without any problems. The absolute foundation of success is the choice and proper preparation of the soil, which should be sufficiently permeable, loamy, and richly supplied with humus. Before you start planting, it is very important to store the purchased bulbs properly. Keep them in a dry, cool, well-ventilated, and dark place so they do not start sprouting prematurely, dry out, or get attacked by mold. Quality storage is the first step toward having strong and healthy plants in the spring.
The ideal time for planting the bulbs into outdoor beds arrives with the coming of autumn, specifically in the months from September to November, when the soil still has enough residual heat for safe rooting. Plant the bulbs into carefully loosened soil at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters, always with the tip facing upward. If you want to achieve a truly rich and unified visual effect in your bed, we recommend keeping a planting distance of 10 to 15 centimeters. This spacing corresponds to roughly 50 to 70 bulbs per square meter, which will create a beautiful and dense flower carpet. Immediately after planting, water the soil slightly so the bulbs adhere better to the earth, but be very careful of permanent waterlogging, which does not suit these bulbous plants at all and could cause them to rot early.
During intense spring growth and the subsequent flowering in April and May, it is essential to maintain only moderate soil moisture. The plant reaches a total height of 30 to 45 centimeters and, thanks to its strong and sturdy stems, does not require the installation of any supports or complicated tying. There is no need to pinch the full fuchsia flowers during growth. Since it is a short-lived perennial from a botanical perspective, it is absolutely crucial to let all the green leaves turn yellow and dry out completely after the plant has finished flowering. The plant uses natural processes to draw important nutrients and energy back from them directly into the underground bulb. This stored energy is absolutely necessary for the tulip to be able to bloom successfully and richly in the upcoming gardening season as well.
Overwintering this stunning tulip is a completely worry-free affair for the grower because the plant is naturally extremely frost-resistant and reliably resists even very low temperatures dropping down to -40 °C (corresponding to frost-resistance zone 3a). Therefore, the bulbs do not need any special cover of evergreen boughs or a layer of mulch for the winter. However, you must be very careful about common garden pests, especially the field vole, which is very fond of snacking on underground bulbs and can decimate an entire planting. A highly effective preventive solution is therefore planting in special protective plastic baskets or mesh. As for health status, avoid excessive watering and poorly drained areas at all costs. Long-term waterlogging very often leads to the development of dangerous fungal diseases, including, most notably, gray mold, fusarium rot, or even the viral mosaic disease.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
