Cosmos bipinnatus
You can grow it as an annual, but you will achieve the longest stems when growing as a biennial. Sowing therefore in the second half of summer, transplanting into the bed (a polytunnel is best) at the beginning of September, so the plants manage to root properly and strengthen before the first frosts arrive. Cover for winter (with straw, brushwood, or white non-woven fabric) if severe bare frosts threaten or plant into a polytunnel.
We recommend starting indoors only. Sow on the surface and gently press into the substrate surface. Transplant into larger pots 25-30 days after sowing; this encourages rooting. 6-8 weeks after sowing, transplant outdoors; plants need lower temperatures of 10-13°C for the growth of basal rosettes. Higher temperatures cause a frail plant and premature flowering. If you plan to sow as late as spring, start 6-8 weeks before the last frosts. Dianthus needs low temperatures for growth and lengthening days for flowering. Only spring is therefore ideal for them.
Support may be needed.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
