Ideal conditions and recommended planting procedure
Beautiful lemon-yellow Yellow Pomponette tulips will reliably liven up your spring garden without major demands for complicated maintenance. To achieve the richest and most vibrant blooming, choose a suitable spot in direct sun or light partial shade for these bulbs. The chosen soil should ideally be loamy, sufficiently rich in humus, but above all, maximally permeable. Plant the bulbs directly into the prepared bed in the autumn months, best from September to the end of November. They are always planted with the tip pointing upward to a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters and at exactly the same spacing from each other. This recommended distance ensures optimal air circulation around the future plants.
Growth, watering, and cutting options
During the spring months, the sturdy bulbs will gradually develop into strong plants reaching an average height of about half a meter. Their naturally sturdy and robust stems will reliably hold even very heavy full blooms and do not require absolutely any artificial support or pinching. Keep regular watering rather moderate, because tulips generally prefer a drier environment and any long-term waterlogging of the root system explicitly harms them and shortens their lifespan. During April and May, when the plants in the beds bloom fully, you can bring their beauty home. They are extremely suitable for cutting into vases, where they maintain their perfect shape for a very long time and brighten literally every interior.
Care for faded plants and protection against pests
Once the beautiful flowers in the bed have definitively faded, undoubtedly the most important moment in year-round care arrives. You must by no means cut off the fresh green leaves immediately; you must wait until they naturally yellow and dry out completely. The bulb itself takes all the valuable energy back from them for successful future overwintering. Since it is a plant with extreme frost resistance falling into zone 3a, the bulbs remain safely stored in the ground all year round and do not need any special winter covering with evergreen boughs at all. Be especially careful only regarding the field vole, which could easily snack on the stored bulbs in winter. In areas with its frequent occurrence, we therefore strongly recommend planting the bulbs in protective plastic baskets instead.
