Tulip Blue Diamond

The main enemy of tulips in heavy and overly moist soil is rot. You may encounter grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) and fusarium rot. If you notice irregular yellowing or brown spots on the plants, it is necessary to discard the affected specimens. Tulips are also sometimes threatened by a virus (Tulip breaking virus), which manifests as unsightly deformation or streaking of the leaves and flowers. Prevention involves choosing suitable, well-draining soil and rotating the planting site every few years.

In the autumn after planting and throughout the winter, they usually do not need any watering at all. In spring, they have only moderate moisture requirements. Usually, natural spring rains are more than enough. However, if there is a prolonged dry spell in the spring, provide them with light watering. Remember to water exclusively at the base of the plant toward the roots; avoiding wetting the leaves will prevent the occurrence of fungal diseases.

Do not, under any circumstances, trim the green leaves or stems. The plant needs its foliage intact to move valuable nutrients back down into the bulb for the next season. However, once the petals have fallen off, remove only the upper seed head (the faded remains of the flower) so the tulip does not waste energy producing seeds. Allow the leaves to yellow and dry out naturally.

You don't need to worry about any demanding winter protection. The Blue Diamond tulip is extremely hardy and can withstand frosts down to -35 °C (it falls into hardiness zone 3b). It remains outdoors in the garden bed year-round; in fact, the cold winter period is beneficial and necessary for its spring awakening and blooming.

If the tulip leaves have sprouted but soon began to yellow and dry out from the edges, the cause is in most cases low-quality, poorly draining soil. Water retention leads to insufficient aeration and root death. We recommend gently clearing away the top layer of soil around the damaged plant to verify if the bulb has been affected by rot. You usually cannot save such a plant, and it is best to remove it from the flowerbed immediately.

They are perfect! This tulip is literally made for cutting. Its sturdy, upright stems reach a height of 40 to 50 cm and do not need any support in the garden bed or in a vase. The flowers retain their shape and beautiful dark purple color for an unusually long time in floral arrangements and will fragrance the entire room.

The tulip is a perennial, but especially with such exhibition double-flowered varieties, we refer to them more as short-lived perennials. This means that for the first two to three years, they bloom very beautifully and fully. Later, however, the bulbs fragment through propagation, and the flowers may become smaller. To maintain the highest quality of large blooms, we recommend digging them up around July, once the bulbs have gone dormant, cleaning them, and storing them in a dry place until the next autumn planting.

This specific double-flowering variety does not serve as a pollinator plant. The large number of petals layered on top of each other creates a barrier, making it difficult for insects to access the pollen and nectar. If you are interested in attracting bees to your spring garden, try combining them with botanical crocuses or grape hyacinths, which bees adore.

Yes, and quite distinctly. Unlike the vast majority of common garden tulips, the 'Blue Diamond' variety is characterized by its unusual and pleasant fragrance. This unique aromatic quality is further complemented by their visual resemblance to large, open peonies.

No part of a tulip is intended for consumption. The entire plant, especially the bulb itself, contains tulip alkaloids, making it mildly toxic if ingested. Even during extended manual planting, it can cause skin irritation for some people (so-called 'tulip fingers'). We recommend extra caution for owners of dogs, puppies, or other pets, for whom the tempting-looking bulbs can be significantly toxic.

When you receive the bulbs and it is not yet the ideal time for planting (or you are waiting for a spot in your garden bed to become free), store them in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. The ideal storage temperature is around 15–20 °C. Never leave the bulbs in a sealed plastic bag, as they could overheat and begin to mold. Lay them out loosely in a cardboard box or a breathable crate, for example.

Plant the bulbs in the autumn, ideally during September, October, or November, before the soil freezes permanently. The rule for the correct planting depth is roughly three times the size of the bulb. For the largest bulbs we supply (size 12/+), this means a depth of 10 to 15 cm. Maintain the same distance, 10 to 15 cm, as spacing between individual bulbs. You can comfortably fit approximately 50 to 80 pieces per square meter.

The 'Blue Diamond' variety enjoys a sunny location or light partial shade the most. For rich, beautiful blooms, it requires permeable, loamy, and humus-rich soil. Drainage is absolutely essential, as tulip bulbs do not tolerate heavy, permanently wet soil well. If they sit in water, they are at high risk of rotting.

Absolutely, they thrive in containers on balconies and terraces. The key is a sufficiently deep pot with drainage holes and a layer of expanded clay (leca) at the bottom to ensure excess water can drain away. Plant the bulbs in the same way you would in a garden bed and leave the container outdoors over winter, so the bulbs can undergo the necessary winter cold.

The dark blue-purple color of Blue Diamond stands out amazingly in contrast with much lighter spring species. Ideal companions include, for example, pure white or pale yellow daffodils. They also complement low carpet plantings of soft blue forget-me-nots or white hyacinths beautifully in large, mixed spring garden beds.
