China asters start to bloom with short days. Since days begin to shorten from the end of June, China asters will bloom most beautifully towards the end of July, in August, and September. That is why China asters are associated with late summer and autumn.
Therefore, it is ideal to sow China asters in April and transplant the seedlings into beds after the last frosts (mid-May); you will harvest the first flowers towards the end of the summer.
We recommend starting China aster seeds indoors; direct sowing into the bed will not work.
Sow 1 seed per cell in a seedling tray. Sow on the surface of the substrate and cover with a layer of vermiculite. Vermiculite helps maintain sufficient humidity for seed germination while allowing light to pass through, which is necessary for China aster germination.
Until the first sprouts appear, it is necessary to water only from below by placing the seedling tray in a tray of water and letting it soak up. You can also water from above, but only use the finest misting, otherwise you will wash away the sown seeds.
China asters need a relatively high temperature of 20–22 °C to germinate. The seeds will germinate in about 7–10 days and will spend 4–5 weeks in the seedling tray until they grow into proper seedlings.
We do not recommend keeping China asters in the seedling tray for too long, nor transplanting them into small pots; you will get the best results if you transplant China asters directly from the seedling tray into the bed.
Even though China aster seedlings can handle light frosts (-6 °C), there is no need to rush, and it is perfectly sufficient to sow them during April and transplant them outdoors after the last frosts.
We do not pinch China asters; they will branch out naturally. China asters are grown relatively closely, so we plant them at a spacing of 12 × 12 cm.
They thrive in humus-rich soil; before planting, you can incorporate matured compost into the beds. Choose a sunny location for them.
Note: do not grow China asters in the same place as last year. Always try to find a new location for them and return to the original spot only after 2–3 years.
China asters most often suffer from Fusarium wilt, so we recommend either (1) choosing China asters that are resistant, such as Matsumoto White, Matsumoto Pink, or Matsumoto Apricot, or (2) always try to plant them in a new location and return to the original spot only after 2–3 years.
If you are a professional and are growing China asters for cutting, we recommend support, i.e., netting, that the China asters will grow through. Without support, it can happen that the stems will be bent or otherwise crooked. Netting is a must for beautifully straight stems.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
