China asters begin to bloom with short days. From the end of June, the days start getting shorter, so China asters will bloom most beautifully towards the end of July, in August, and in September. That is why China asters are associated with high summer and autumn.
It is therefore ideal to sow China asters in April and transplant the China aster seedlings outside into beds after the last frost (mid-May); you will harvest the first flowers towards the end of summer.
We recommend starting China asters indoors; direct sowing into the bed will not work.
Sow 1 seed per cell of the seed tray. Sow on the surface of the substrate and cover with a layer of vermiculite. The vermiculite will help maintain sufficient moisture for the seeds to germinate, but at the same time, it lets in the light that China asters need to germinate.
Until the first sprouts emerge, it is necessary to water only from the bottom by placing the seed tray in a bowl of water and letting the water wick up. You can also water from above, just use the finest misting, otherwise you will wash away the sown seeds.
China asters require a relatively high temperature of 20 - 22 °C for germination. The seeds will germinate in about 7 - 10 days and will spend 4 - 5 weeks in the seed tray before growing into proper seedlings.
We recommend not keeping China asters in the seed tray for too long, nor transplanting them into pots; you will get the best result if you transplant the China asters straight from the seed tray into the bed.
Even though China aster seedlings can handle frosts (- 6 °C), there is no need to rush and it is perfectly sufficient if you sow China asters during April and transplant them outside after the last frost.
We do not pinch China asters; they will branch naturally for you. China asters are grown quite densely, so we plant them at a spacing of 12 × 12 cm.
They thrive in humus-rich soil; you can work mature compost into the beds before planting. Choose a sunny location for them.
Attention, do not grow China asters in the same place as last year. Always try to find a new spot for China asters and return to the original spot only after 2 - 3 years.
China asters most often suffer from Fusarium wilt, so we recommend either (1) choosing China asters that are resistant, such as Matsumoto White, Matsumoto Pink, or Matsumoto Apricot, or (2) always trying to plant China asters in a new spot and returning to the original one only after 2 - 3 years.
If you are a professional and grow China asters for cutting, we recommend support, specifically a net that the China asters will grow through. Without support, it can otherwise happen that the stems will be bent and otherwise twisted. For beautifully straight stems, a net is a necessity.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
