We recommend planting 'Silver Spring' garlic bulbs in the autumn, ideally from September to November, before the soil freezes. If you do not plan to plant the bulbs immediately upon delivery, store them in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place so they do not start sprouting prematurely. For planting, choose a sunny location with well-permeable, rather dry sandy-loam soil. Place the bulbs into the prepared soil at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters with the tip facing upward. Maintain a spacing of approximately 15 centimeters apart, which corresponds to roughly 30 to 50 bulbs per square meter. Thorough soil permeability is key, because in heavy and waterlogged soil, the bulbs could easily rot over the winter.
This undemanding perennial, which is suitable even for complete beginners, does not need any complex care during the growing season. Garlic will grow well in drier sandy-loam soil in direct sunlight, so water it only very moderately, especially during periods of prolonged drought. A great advantage of this ornamental species is its absolute resilience – it does not suffer from any common diseases, and garden pests reliably avoid it as well. Moreover, the fragrant flowers actively attract bees, butterflies, and other useful pollinators.
After flowering during the summer, let the bulbs retreat naturally. The green leaves will begin to turn yellow gradually and transfer all nutrients back to the underground part for successful growth next year. A good combination is with cushion-forming drought-tolerant perennials that will cover their gradually yellowing leaves and thus keep the flowerbed visually attractive. You can quietly leave the sturdy stems on the plant, as the seed pods have an interesting structure and look great even after drying. The plant is fully frost-resistant down to -28 degrees Celsius, so leave the bulbs in the bed over the winter without worry. In spring, they will reliably delight you again with new shoots and edible flowers.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
