This ornamental garlic is a suitable choice even for beginners looking for a low-maintenance plant. Garlic will grow well in drier, sandy-loam soil in direct sunlight, where it will fully reach its potential. The foundation for success is always well-drained soil, as the bulbs do not tolerate permanent waterlogging, which could lead to rotting. The advantage of this species is its overall resilience—you will not be bothered by pests or common diseases in the garden. If you do not plan to plant the bulbs immediately upon delivery, store them in a dry, cool, and dark place so that they do not sprout prematurely and lose energy.
The planting itself takes place in the autumn, between September and November, before the arrival of the first hard frosts. Plant the bulbs with the tip facing up at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. To highlight the beauty of their small white-pink flowers, we recommend planting in groups. Maintain a spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters between individual plants, which corresponds to roughly 50 to 100 bulbs per square meter. After planting, it is good to water the bed slightly so that the soil settles better, but subsequently, the plant will suffice with normal rainfall, as it requires only minimal supplemental moisture.
During May and June, you can look forward to a rich display of fragrant white flowers that attract bees and butterflies from the surroundings. During this period, the garlic does not require special care or fertilization. Around mid-summer, the entire plant naturally goes dormant, which in practice means that its leaves will slowly turn yellow and dry up. A thoughtful combination with cushion-forming drought-tolerant perennials that will hide these dying leaves is therefore recommended. You can safely cut the flowers, carried on sturdy stems reaching a height of 30 to 50 centimeters, for vases or leave them to dry for winter decorations.
As winter approaches, you do not need to worry about complicated winterization or digging up the bulbs. This ornamental garlic is fully frost-hardy and can withstand temperatures dropping to -28 °C, so the bulbs remain safely stored in the ground all year round. In one carefully chosen spot, it will reliably bloom as a perennial for many years. A golden rule for growers is that the entire plant is edible. You can use the small, pure white florets with pink stamens to creatively decorate your culinary creations.
