Allium bulbs will grow well in drier sandy-loam soil in direct sunlight. Due to their Mediterranean origin, this undemanding perennial loves heat and drought. Permeable soil is absolutely essential for it, because in waterlogged soil, the bulbs could start to rot. If you have heavier clay soil in your garden, we recommend mixing in enough sand or fine gravel before planting for better drainage. The location should be as sunny as possible, which ensures a rich supply of light pink flowers and the overall vitality of the plant. It is ideal to choose a spot in a perennial bed, rock garden, or a dry stone wall. These Alliums form a perfect composition with drought-loving ornamental grasses or herbs, to which they add unexpected lightness and color.
The bulbs you receive from us need to be planted in the ground during the autumn months, specifically from September to November. If you cannot plant them immediately after delivery, store them temporarily in a cooler, dry, and dark place so they do not start sprouting prematurely. Planting itself is very simple. Place the bulbs into the soil at a depth of about 10 centimeters. To achieve a beautiful and full look in the bed, we recommend planting the bulbs at a spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters apart. You will need approximately 50 to 100 bulbs per square meter, which will create a breathtaking colorful carpet in the spring. During the spring growing season and flowering, which takes place from May to July, the plant usually makes do with regular rainfall. It requires additional watering only during periods of extreme drought. Allium roseum is specific in that after flowering, it naturally retreats back into the bulb. The green leaves will gradually begin to yellow and dry out as the plant draws nutrients back for the next year. A good combination is with mat-forming drought-tolerant perennials that will cover their gradually yellowing leaves. During flowering, you can also cut the stems for a vase without worry, where they will continue to bring joy for up to a fortnight, and the flowers can even be used as an edible garnish for dishes. Regarding health and resistance, this is a hugely grateful plant. It completely avoids common diseases and does not attract any typical garden pests, so you don't need to deal with any chemical sprays. As winter approaches, it is not necessary to dig up or specially protect the bulbs. The plant is fully frost-resistant down to -18°C. The only thing you need to watch out for over winter is excessive soil moisture. If you have the Alliums planted in a permeable substrate as recommended, they will survive the winter months without the slightest harm and will wake up in full strength in the spring.
