Growing ornamental black garlic is undemanding and brings both joy and practical use to the garden. We plant these bulbs in the autumn, ideally between the beginning of September and the end of November, when the soil is still warm enough for rooting. If you are not planting the purchased bulbs immediately, store them in a paper bag or a breathable crate in a dry, dark place with a lower temperature. For planting, always choose a sunny location with well-drained, preferably loamy or sandy soil. We always plant the bulbs with the tip facing up at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters and leave them plenty of living space, with a recommended spacing for healthy growth of around 40 centimeters. Garlic will grow well in drier soil, while heavy and permanently waterlogged locations could cause unwanted bulb rot.
In the spring, the plant sprouts very quickly and gradually reaches a height of 60 to 80 centimeters. Because its green leaves naturally turn yellow and go dormant during the summer, it is an excellent combination with cushion-forming drought-tolerant perennials that will hide them. These lower-growing cover plants will cleverly hide the dying foliage, while the striking creamy-white garlic flowers will shine above them from May to July. The inflorescences, reaching a width of up to 10 centimeters, are strongly aromatic, edible, and reliably act as a magnet for bees and other beneficial pollinators. If you like floral decorations, you can safely cut the sturdy stems for a fresh vase or dry them after they have fully bloomed for a long-lasting arrangement in your interior.
A great advantage of this perennial species is its overall hardiness and low maintenance. During a hot summer, it enjoys natural drought and requires almost no additional watering, saving you time and water. You do not need to worry about preventive spraying because this plant does not suffer from fungal diseases and is avoided by common garden pests. Furthermore, no special preparation, pruning, or laborious digging up of bulbs is needed before the approaching winter. Black garlic is highly frost-resistant down to severe frosts of around -23 °C (temperature zone 6a), so it reliably survives even a harsh winter directly in the open ground. In one well-chosen spot, it will reliably grow and bloom for many years; all you need to do is occasionally weed the surroundings.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
