Allium neapolitanum traveled to us from the sunny Mediterranean, where it grows naturally in dry steppe communities. In spring, during May and June, it produces thirty to fifty-centimeter-tall upright stems that bear delicate, star-shaped, pure white flowers. The entire plant also has a pleasant fragrance and acts as a reliable lure for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, to whom it offers valuable food at the beginning of the season. We always select and send our customers the largest available bulbs, from which strong and healthy plants will easily grow. In gardens, this garlic looks absolutely great in combination with drought-tolerant grasses and various herbs, where its pure white flowers stand out beautifully. Fans of cut flowers will also fall in love with the plant, as it will stay fresh in a vase for a good two weeks. Given that both the leaves and flowers are edible, it can also be used to garnish spring dishes. Alliums will grow well in drier sandy-loam soil in direct sunlight, where they have ideal conditions for their development. Avoid heavy and permanently waterlogged soils, as excessive winter or summer moisture could lead to the bulbs rotting. It is perfect for dry stone walls, gravel beds, at the edges of rock gardens, or among various drought-loving herbs.
Planting takes place exclusively in the autumn, ideally between September and November, before the ground freezes outside. If you do not plan to plant the bulbs immediately after receiving the package, store them in a dark, dry, cool, and well-ventilated place. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters and keep a spacing of approximately 10 centimeters between them so they have enough living space. We always select and deliver the largest available bulbs to our customers, so you can be sure to look forward to really strong, healthy, and vital plants in your very first growing season.
During the spring growth and flowering itself, this plant usually manages without any problems with regular rainfall. Additional watering is only necessary during really significant and prolonged droughts. During May and June, the plant will delight you with a profusion of fragrant white flowers on sturdy stems that reach a height of 30 to 50 centimeters. After the Allium finishes blooming at the beginning of summer, it naturally begins to draw nutrients back into the bulb and prepare for a necessary summer rest. At this time, its leaves gradually yellow and dry out. A good combination is with mat-forming drought-tolerant perennials that will reliably cover their gradually yellowing leaves and keep your bed attractive at all times.
You definitely won't have any unwanted guests spoiling your gardening experience; this specific type of Allium does not suffer from pests or common fungal diseases. The plant is reliably frost-resistant down to -18°C, so it will hibernate directly outside in the bed without any major problems in our climatic conditions. Before the arrival of severe frosts without snow cover, however, you can preventively cover the planting site with a thin layer of evergreen boughs, compost, or dry leaves.
