Hyacintovec španělský je nenáročná cibulovina, která nejlépe poroste a pokvete v polostínu nebo ve světlém stínu, ideálně pod vyššími listnatými stromy. Vyžaduje chladnější místo s dostatečně vlhkou, humózní a především dobře propustnou půdou. Na správně zvoleném stanovišti se s ním budete těšit dlouhé roky, protože jde o spolehlivou a dlouhověkou trvalku, která se navíc sama ochotně rozrůstá. Během jarní vegetace potřebuje rostlina přiměřenou vláhu, ale nesvědčí jí trvalé přemokření, proto je tolik důležitá dobrá propustnost zeminy. Tato cibulovina je navíc zcela bez chorob, takže vás nečeká žádný nepříjemný boj se škůdci a její pěstování hravě zvládne i úplný začátečník.
Cibulky vysazujte do záhonů vždy na podzim, ideálně v období od září do listopadu, dokud půda ještě nepromrzne. Pokud je nemůžete zasadit hned po obdržení, bezpečně je uskladněte na suchém, chladnějším a temném místě. Samotná výsadba do půdy je velmi jednoduchá – cibulky umísťujte do hloubky 5 až 10 centimetrů. Aby na záhonu vznikl opravdu bohatý porost, dodržujte spon přibližně 10 centimetrů mezi jednotlivými cibulkami. Pokud toužíte po hustém kobercovém efektu, můžete vysadit až 100 cibulek na jeden metr čtvereční. Z takto zasazených cibulek pak na jaře vyrostou zdravé zelené trsy dorůstající celkové výšky 25 až 40 centimetrů.
Během dubna a května vás hyacintovec potěší bohatou záplavou blankytně modrých květů, které do vaší zahrady spolehlivě přilákají včely a další užitečné opylovače. Tyto zvonkovité květy jsou naprosto ideální k řezu do jarních kytic. Pokud si je chcete užít doma ve váze co nejdéle, odstřihněte květní stvoly těsně před tím, než se jednotlivé kvítky zcela otevřou. Díky tomuto malému triku vám ve váze vydrží krásné a svěží i celé dva týdny. Během růstu rostlinu nijak nezaštipujte, není to vůbec potřeba, stačí pouze odebírat stvoly na řez, případně po odkvětu jemně odstranit semeníky.
Po odkvětu přichází velmi důležitá fáze pěstování – je naprosto klíčové nechat listy přirozeně zežloutnout a zatáhnout. Zelené listy totiž pomocí fotosyntézy vyživují cibulku na další sezónu a jejich předčasným odstřižením byste rostlinu výrazně oslabili. Jakmile listy zaschnou, rostlina přechází do období odpočinku. Hyacintovec je extrémně mrazuvzdorný, bez problémů zvládá mrazy v zóně 3b, tedy teploty až do -34 °C. Na zimu tak cibulky zůstávají zcela bez obav v zemi a nevyžadují vůbec žádné speciální zazimování ani ochranné přikrývání. Příští jaro vás pak znovu spolehlivě přivítají svými zářivě modrými květy.
