The Spanish bluebell is an undemanding bulb that will best grow and bloom in partial shade or light shade, ideally under taller deciduous trees. It requires a cooler spot with sufficiently moist, humus-rich, and, above all, well-permeable soil. In a properly chosen location, you will enjoy it for many years, because it is a reliable and long-lived perennial that also spreads willingly on its own. During the spring vegetation, the plant needs moderate moisture, but it does not benefit from constant waterlogging, which is why good soil permeability is so important. This bulb is also completely free of diseases, so you face no unpleasant fight against pests, and its cultivation can easily be managed by a complete beginner.
Plant the bulbs in beds in the autumn, ideally from September to November, before the soil freezes. If you cannot plant them immediately after receiving them, store them safely in a dry, cooler, and dark place. Planting in the ground is very simple – place the bulbs at a depth of 5 to 10 centimeters. To create a truly rich stand in the flowerbed, maintain a spacing of approximately 10 centimeters between individual bulbs. If you desire a dense carpet effect, you can plant up to 100 bulbs per square meter. From bulbs planted this way, healthy green clumps reaching a total height of 25 to 40 centimeters will grow in the spring.
During April and May, the Spanish bluebell will delight you with a rich flood of sky-blue flowers, which will reliably attract bees and other useful pollinators to your garden. These bell-shaped flowers are absolutely ideal for cutting into spring bouquets. If you want to enjoy them at home in a vase for as long as possible, cut the flower stems just before the individual flowers open completely. Thanks to this little trick, they will stay beautiful and fresh in a vase for up to two weeks. Do not pinch the plant during growth; it is not necessary at all, just pick stems for bouquets or gently remove seed pods after flowering.
After flowering, a very important phase of cultivation begins – it is absolutely crucial to let the leaves turn yellow and die back naturally. The green leaves nourish the bulb for the next season through photosynthesis, and by cutting them off prematurely, you would significantly weaken the plant. As soon as the leaves dry out, the plant enters a rest period. The Spanish bluebell is extremely frost-resistant, easily handling frosts in zone 3b, i.e., temperatures down to -34 °C. In winter, the bulbs remain in the ground without any worries and do not require any special overwintering or protective coverings. Next spring, they will again reliably greet you with their vibrant blue flowers.
