German Garlic

This species of mountain garlic will delight you with its flowers in mid-summer, usually in July and August. It produces small but beautiful spherical inflorescences in a light purple shade.

The plant itself is rather short (reaching 20 to 30 cm). Its green to gray-green leaves are also highly decorative; they sprout from the bulb early in the spring and form very compact, dense clumps.

Yes, the ornamental onion (Allium senescens) is fully edible and has a very pleasant aroma. It is completely safe for you, your children, and pets.

• Leaves: You can finely chop them over fresh bread with butter, add them to salads, soups, or herbal spreads. They have a milder and less pungent taste than standard kitchen garlic and can be harvested continuously.
• Flowers: They are delicious and visually very effective as an edible garnish for summer dishes.

The winter effect of Allium glaucum means that its grey-green leaves maintain a nice, fresh appearance long into the winter, when most other bulbs and perennials have long since retreated back into the soil.

Thanks to this, your flower bed won't look completely bare in the autumn and early winter. Then, in early spring, these clumps quickly regain their strength and reliably fill in any gaps in the garden.

Yes, and truly magnificently! Even though they have a faint scent of garlic to humans, their light purple flowers are like a huge magnet for small pollinators.

The flowers are literally full of nectar and appear in the summer months (July and August), when many spring plants are already finishing blooming. By planting this allium in full sun, you will significantly support bees, hoverflies, butterflies, and bumblebees in your immediate surroundings.

Allium senescens (Mountain Garlic) is a very undemanding perennial, but it requires full sun for abundant flowering. It would not thrive well in the shade and would flower poorly.

As for the soil, it best prefers:

• Well-draining, loamy, or sandy soil.
• It prefers drier conditions, so it does not require any special peat substrates.
• It is crucial that water does not stand at the planting site, as this could cause the bulbs to rot.

Definitely! Thanks to its compact height of 20 to 30 cm, Allium senescens is perfect for growing in containers, troughs, or decorative window boxes on balconies and terraces. It also looks beautiful as part of an alpine garden or rockery.

When growing in a container, however, remember to ensure good water drainage. Place a thicker drainage layer (e.g., expanded clay, pebbles, or gravel) at the bottom of the pot and use permeable, sandy soil.

Thanks to its extraordinary hardiness, this perennial is an ideal choice even for complete beginners. It does not require complex care, staking, or any chemical treatment.

Since you will receive large and healthy bulbs from us, success in growing is basically guaranteed. You just need to choose a sunny spot, plant the bulb correctly in the autumn, and then look forward to a summer flood of flowers.

We have great news for you! Allium senescens (German garlic) is an exceptionally healthy plant that is virtually free of diseases and completely ignored by pests.

Thanks to its essential oils and aromatic scent, it even naturally repels some unwelcome guests in the flower bed. You won't have to worry about invasions of aphids, caterpillars, or slugs, and it is usually unappealing to browsing wildlife as well.

The plant gradually spreads in the soil as the mother bulbs produce daughter bulbs underground. From a single planted bulb, it will become a dense and rich clump after a few years.

If you want to propagate the onion to other areas or thin out an older clump, simply dig it up carefully with a spade in the autumn, divide it by hand, and plant the individual bulbs in new locations. This will rejuvenate the plant and give it new vigor.

Certainly! Although the ornamental onion has slightly shorter stems than tall ornamental alliums, it is excellent for cutting in smaller table bouquets, where it stays fresh for a long time.

Furthermore, it is a perfect plant for drying. If you cut the flower heads when fully bloomed (during dry weather) and hang them upside down in a dark, well-ventilated place, they will retain their shape and color and serve as a beautiful decoration for winter arrangements.

If you notice that the leaves are turning yellow, wilting, and the dug-up bulbs are soft or even rotting, the culprit is almost always waterlogging or soil that is too heavy and compacted.

Allium glaucum absolutely cannot stand sitting in water for long periods. If you have it planted in impermeable clay soil or in a place where puddles form in the autumn, we recommend digging up and replanting the bulbs as soon as possible. When replanting, add a larger amount of coarse sand or small gravel to the hole to ensure perfect drainage.
