If you are looking for a reliable spring flower that is easy to care for, the 'Lydia' tulip will definitely not disappoint you. The basis for successful cultivation is a properly chosen location. These attractive bulbs literally love the sun, but they tolerate light partial shade under deciduous trees very well. Humous, lighter, and safely well-drained soil will suit them best. If, on the other hand, you have very heavy clay soil in your garden, we recommend mixing in a little coarser sand before planting so that the bulbs do not stand in water and rot. Since you will receive the largest premium bulbs (size 12/+), it is important to store them correctly after unpacking the shipment. Keep them exclusively in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place until the moment of planting so they do not start sprouting prematurely or succumb to mold.
The bulbs are planted into the prepared bed exclusively in the autumn, ideally during the months of September, October, and November. An important rule for planting bulbs is a depth that should correspond to roughly three times the height of the bulb itself. For the 'Lydia' variety, this means placing them at a depth of approximately 10 to 15 centimeters. Always remember that the bulb must point with the wider flat part down and the tip up. The ideal distance, or spacing, for planting is 10 to 15 centimeters apart. The plants nicely complement other perennials in spring beds and do not need to be tied to supports at all. Thanks to their strong stems, they reliably maintain a neat shape even at their maximum height of thirty to forty-five centimeters.
With the arrival of March, the tulips will begin to sprout and soon set vibrant fuchsia-pink flowers with a pleasant fragrance. It is these flowers early in spring that reliably attract the first bees and other useful pollinators to your garden. During the growth and flowering period, the plants appreciate moderate watering, but the soil must not be permanently waterlogged. During the season, you can slightly support the tulips with a suitable fertilizer intended directly for bulbs. If you decide to use these beauties for cutting, cut their strong stems ideally early in the morning when they are fully hydrated. For flowers that you leave to finish blooming in the bed, it is necessary to break off the seed pods in time. This prevents the plant from exhausting itself by forming seeds. However, leave the leaves untouched until they dry out completely on their own.
This tulip variety excels in its tremendous frost-hardiness; it easily handles even very strong frosts dropping down to -34 °C. Thanks to this, the bulbs can safely overwinter directly in the outdoor soil, and there is no need for autumn covering. Although it is a perennial plant, to maintain large and healthy flowers, we recommend digging up the clumps carefully after approximately three years in the summer months, dividing the daughter bulbs, and replanting them in the autumn. Among the rare problems is gray mold, which you can easily prevent by not overwatering the bed and ensuring sufficient airflow. If the mosaic virus were to appear on the plants, which causes deformation and unnatural color streaking, it is unfortunately necessary to remove the infected plant so that the infection does not spread.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
