Growing the fragrant tulip 'Flash Point' is easy, even for absolute gardening beginners. These bulbs thrive best in full sun or light partial shade, where their radiant fuchsia color stands out in spring. A crucial condition for successful growth is choosing the right soil, which must be well-drained and loose. The bulbs strictly dislike long-term waterlogging; for this reason, when planting in heavier or compacted soils, it is highly recommended to add a little clean sand to the bottom of the planting hole for much better drainage. Overall, this is an undemanding plant with relatively low water needs, so normal spring rainfall is usually sufficient. Since it smells fantastic and its large, double blooms faithfully resemble peonies, it is worth finding a representative and well-visible spot in the garden, or you can grow them specifically in a bed intended for cutting for vases.
Planting the large bulbs (size 12/+) takes place in the autumn. Follow these important rules to achieve the best results:
Planting time: Ideally from September to November, until the soil freezes deep. If you do not plant the bulbs immediately after purchase, store them in a very cool, dark, dry, and well-ventilated place so they do not start sprouting prematurely.
Depth and spacing: Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters, always with the sharp tip pointing upwards. Leave 10 to 15 centimeters of space between individual pieces. For mass planting, count on about 100 bulbs per square meter.
Overwintering: You really don't need to worry about the bulbs hidden in the soil during the long winter. This variety is fully frost-hardy down to -40 °C (climate zone 3a) and thus requires absolutely no additional overwintering or covering with evergreen branches.
During the spring season, 'Flash Point' requires no complex care. The plant reaches a total height of 30 to 45 centimeters and naturally forms very sturdy stems, so it requires no support even during heavy rain. This popular short-lived perennial blooms in April and May; after flowering, it is absolutely necessary to let the green leaves naturally dry out and die back. Therefore, never pinch the plant; the bulbs must draw valuable nutrients from the leaves for flowering in the following year. Watch out for common pests like the field vole, which very much likes to feast on bulbs. As reliable prevention, we recommend planting directly into special plastic baskets.
