Choosing the right site is key for this small alpine Allium. It thrives best in full sun in lighter, sandy, and well-drained soil. It pairs well with cushion-forming, drought-tolerant perennials that cover their gradually yellowing leaves. Conversely, increased moisture does not suit it. In waterlogged soil, it is susceptible to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea). Before planting in heavier soils, we recommend adding a layer of sand or fine gravel to the bottom of the hole for drainage. Moreover, the entire plant is aromatic and edible; its flowers reliably serve as an attractant for pollinators.
We plant the bulbs themselves in autumn, with September, October, and November being the ideal months. It is necessary to keep the bulbs in a cool, well-ventilated, and dark place until the moment of planting.
Practical tips for growing:
Always plant the bulbs with the tip facing up to a depth of 8 to 10 cm.
Ideal spacing in the flower bed is 5 to 10 cm apart.
To create a dense carpet, plant 50 to 100 bulbs per m2.
Once this perennial sprouts in the spring to a height of 15-25 centimeters, it requires practically no further care or regular watering. This species is fully accustomed to drier conditions. If you want to enjoy the white flowers at home as well, cut them for a vase during May or June; they are also excellent for drying. After flowering, let the plant naturally wither into the bulb to build up strength. With the arrival of winter, you don't have to worry, as this is an extremely hardy perennial. It handles deep frosts down to -28 °C without any issues and safely overwinters directly in its location without additional winter protection.
