Growing the 'Precocious' daffodil is a breeze even for beginner gardeners. It all starts with choosing the right spot. This species thrives best in full sun or light shade, where its vibrant colors will perfectly brighten up waking spring beds. The soil should be primarily well-drained and rich in nutrients and humus. Excessively heavy and permanently waterlogged soil is not at all suitable for the bulbs and unnecessarily increases the risk of fungal diseases, such as Fusarium or grey mold. If you have heavier clay soil in your garden, we recommend adding a little sand or fine gravel to the bottom of the planting hole for better drainage.
The actual planting of the bulbs takes place in the autumn months, ideally from September to November, before the arrival of heavy, persistent frosts. Until then, store them in a dry and cool place. Always plant the bulbs tip side up at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters. Safely maintain the same distance—about 10 to 15 centimeters—between individual plants. Daffodils are fully frost-resistant down to temperatures of -34 °C. Once you plant them in the autumn, you don't need to worry about complex winter protection at all; they will reliably overwinter in the ground without any additional cover.
In the spring, when the first green leaves and subsequently sturdy stems begin to appear, provide the plants with moderate and regular watering. Daffodils grow to a height of around 40 to 45 centimeters and have a naturally sturdy structure, so you don't need to add any support. They are excellent for cutting into vases and flower arrangements. After flowering in April or May, you can remove the flower heads, but leave the green leaves in place to dry out gradually. The plant vitally needs them to draw energy back into the bulb for the next season.
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
