Site selection and planting: This large-flowered daffodil is a popular spring perennial, and growing it is absolutely trouble-free. Once the largest bulbs arrive in the autumn, store them in an airy and cool place until planting. Planting itself takes place from September to November. Choose a sunny to semi-shaded spot with loamy, well-draining soil. Plant the bulbs tip-up at a depth of 15 to 20 centimeters. Maintain a spacing of 10 to 15 centimeters between individual plants so they have enough space to grow. Keep soil moisture at a moderate level; the bed should not dry out, but it should not stand in mud either.
Flowering and disease prevention: In the spring, sturdy leaves will emerge, followed by robust stems in April reaching a height of around 40 centimeters. During this time, the plant consumes the most energy and will appreciate moderate watering. You can look forward to healthy and strongly fragrant flowers that will attract the first pollinators to the garden. Furthermore, the 'British Gamble' variety is excellent as a cut flower with a long vase life.
Post-season care and overwintering: To enjoy the flowers for many years, proper post-season care is key. Fundamentally, do not remove the leaves until they turn yellow and dry out on their own. The bulb draws valuable substances from them for successful overwintering. The daffodil is not a short-lived perennial; it can last for many years in one place. The variety is fully frost-hardy and can withstand incredible frosts down to -34 °C. Thanks to this extreme resilience, the bulbs remain in the ground year-round without the need for any winter covering or laborious digging up. Just let them rest in the garden bed, and the cycle of beauty will start anew in the spring.
