Growing the fragrant, double-flowered narcissus 'Waylon' is a joy even for complete gardening beginners. These premium and above-standard large bulbs of 14/16 size love sunny to semi-shaded spots. Before planting, store the bulbs in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place so they do not start sprouting prematurely or get moldy. Proper soil preparation is essential—ideally well-drained and humus-rich soil in which standing water will not accumulate. We recommend improving heavier clay soil with coarse sand or small gravel to prevent rotting. As for watering, the narcissus does not need too much moisture; it gets by perfectly with normal rainfall and morning dew.
The ideal time for planting in beds or spacious window boxes is from September until December, as long as the outdoor soil hasn't frozen deep. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters, with the narrow tip always pointing upward toward the surface. To create a truly rich spring effect, we recommend planting the bulbs in larger groups with moderate spacing of 5 to 10 centimeters, which corresponds to roughly fifty bulbs per square meter. During the spring months, especially in April and May, the plant will reward you with beautifully fragrant copper and orange flowers that grow 25 to 40 centimeters tall and are perfect for cutting into vases.
Care for narcissi after blooming is absolutely simple. You can carefully remove the faded flowers to prevent unnecessary seed formation, but always let the green leaves dry out and yellow naturally on the plant. It is thanks to them that the plant replenishes the nutrients needed for rich blooming in the following year, and it does not need to be pruned. The narcissus 'Waylon' is a fully frost-hardy perennial that can withstand extreme temperatures down to -34 °C. The bulbs therefore remain in the ground through the whole winter and require no special protection from frost. However, be very careful about winter and spring waterlogging, which can lead to the development of dangerous fungal diseases, such as gray or fusarium rot.
