Growing 'Chromacolor' daffodils is ideal even for beginner gardeners due to their low maintenance. Plant the bulbs in the autumn, ideally from September to November, as soon as soil temperatures drop slightly. Choose a sunny or partially shaded spot with well-draining, loamy, and humus-rich soil. Place the bulbs at a depth of 15 to 20 centimeters with the tip facing upwards. Maintain spacing between bulbs of roughly 10 to 15 centimeters, which corresponds to approximately fifty pieces per square meter. If you are not planting the bulbs immediately after receiving them, store them in a dry, cool, and well-ventilated place so they do not start to sprout or mold prematurely.
During spring growth and flowering in April and May, daffodils need moderate and regular watering. The soil should not be waterlogged, but not completely dry either. Sturdy stems reach a height of 40 to 50 centimeters and do not require any support, which makes them great flowers for cutting into vases. As soon as the flowers on the flowerbed fade, it is crucial to let the green leaves turn yellow and dry out naturally. The green matter draws important nutrients back into the bulb during this period so that it has enough strength for abundant flowering in the coming year. Do not prune the plant in any way; you can only remove withered flowers so that it does not exhaust itself by creating seeds.
'Chromacolor' daffodil is a highly frost-resistant perennial that can easily withstand temperatures down to -40 °C. The bulbs thus remain in the soil year-round and do not require any special overwintering. It is only important to ensure good soil drainage, as there is a risk of fusarium rot or grey mold in heavy and waterlogged soils. With proper and undemanding care, these fragrant daffodils will delight you every spring for many years.
