For snapdragons, we always recommend starting seedlings indoors; direct sowing will not work.
Snapdragon seeds are tiny, so prepare for meticulous work. Sow on the surface of the substrate and do not cover, as snapdragons need light to germinate. We emphasize, therefore, not to cover the seeds with anything, not even a layer of vermiculite.
Keep the seedling tray at a temperature of 16 - 20 °C.
Snapdragon seeds are minuscule, so until they grow into proper seedlings, it is necessary to water only from the bottom by placing the seedling tray in a dish of water and letting the water wick up. You can also water from the top, but use only the finest misting, otherwise you will wash away the sown seeds.
Under ideal conditions, snapdragons germinate in 4 - 7 days and will spend 4 - 5 weeks in the seedling tray before growing into a proper seedling. Snapdragons can go straight from the seedling tray into the garden bed; there is no need to transplant them into a larger tray or pots. We recommend only hardening off the seedlings so they get used to outdoor conditions and strengthen a bit.
Snapdragon seedlings can withstand light frosts (- 6 °C), so don't be afraid to plant them even before the last frosts; they will handle it. Plant with a spacing of 15 × 15 cm.
We do not pinch snapdragons. One seedling will produce one sturdy main stem and several side stems, so they will branch naturally.
Snapdragons can also be grown with more intensive spacing (40 - 65 plants per m2, or even 65 - 105 plants per m2), but there we risk fungal diseases appearing. It is therefore better to give them more space.
Snapdragons thrive in humus-rich soil; before planting, you can work mature compost into the garden beds. Choose a sunny location for them.
It is ideal to water snapdragons at the roots so that the leaves stay dry. This prevents various fungal diseases that can plague snapdragons. Keep up regular watering for snapdragons and don't forget to fertilize regularly. Once the snapdragons start to bloom, you can reduce watering.
If you are a professional growing snapdragons for cutting, we recommend support, or rather a net, through which the snapdragons will grow. Without support, the stems may otherwise end up bent and twisted. For beautifully straight stems, a net is a must.
Snapdragons are divided into 4 groups; group 1 are the earliest and group 4 are the late ones. You can therefore sow and plant group 1 first, as it will bloom even at lower temperatures and with shorter days. Whereas you would rather leave group 4 until the end of summer.
Our selection includes snapdragons in these groups:
Group 1 - 2
Maryland, Costa, Frappe, Snapstar
Group 3 - 4
Potomac, Madame Butterfly
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
