For Snapdragons, we always recommend pre-growing seedlings; direct sowing will not work.
Snapdragon seeds are tiny, so be prepared for painstaking work. Sow on the surface of the substrate and do not cover, as the Snapdragon needs light to germinate. We emphasize not to cover the seeds with anything, not even a layer of vermiculite.
Keep the seed tray at a temperature of 16 - 20 °C.
Snapdragon seeds are minuscule, so until they grow into proper seedlings, it is necessary to water only from the bottom by placing the tray in a bowl of water and letting the water soak upwards. You can water from the top, but use the finest misting possible; otherwise, you will wash away the sown seeds.
Under ideal conditions, the Snapdragon will germinate in 4 - 7 days and spend 4 - 5 weeks in the seed tray before growing into a proper seedling. Snapdragons can go straight from the seed tray into the bed; there is no need to transplant them into a larger tray or pots. We only recommend hardening off the seedlings so they get used to outdoor conditions and strengthen a bit.
Snapdragon seedlings can withstand light frosts (-6 °C), so don't be afraid to plant them even before the last frost; they can handle it. Plant at a spacing of 15 × 15 cm.
Do not pinch back Snapdragons. One seedling will create one solid main stem and several side stems; they will branch out naturally.
Snapdragons can be grown at a more intensive spacing (40 - 65 plants per m2, or even 65 - 105 plants per m2), but then we risk the appearance of fungal diseases. It is therefore better to give them more space.
Snapdragons thrive in humus-rich soil; before planting, you can incorporate well-matured compost into the beds. Choose a sunny location for them.
It is ideal to water Snapdragons at the roots so that the leaves stay dry. This will prevent various fungal diseases that can trouble Snapdragons. Maintain regular watering for the Snapdragon and don't forget to fertilize regularly. Once the Snapdragons start to bloom, you can reduce watering.
If you are a professional and growing Snapdragons for cutting, we recommend a support, i.e., a net, which the Snapdragons will grow through. Without support, it can happen that the stems become bent or otherwise twisted. For beautifully straight stems, a net is a necessity.
Snapdragons are divided into 4 groups, group 1 being the earliest and group 4 late. You can therefore sow and plant group 1 first, as it will bloom even in lower temperatures and shorter days. While group 4 is better left until the end of summer.
In our offer, Snapdragons are in these groups:
Group 1 - 2
Maryland, Costa, Frappe, Snapstar
Group 3 - 4
Potomac, Madame Butterfly
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
