SOWING For Snapdragons, we always recommend starting seedlings indoors; direct sowing will not work.
Snapdragon seeds are tiny, so prepare for meticulous work. Sow on the surface of the substrate and do not cover, as Snapdragon needs light to germinate. We emphasize not covering the seeds with anything, not even a layer of vermiculite.
Keep the seed tray at a temperature of 16 - 20 °C.
Snapdragon seeds are tiny, so until they grow into proper seedlings, it is necessary to water only from the bottom, by placing the seed tray in a tray of water and letting the water wick up. You can water from the top, but use only the finest misting, otherwise you will wash away the sown seeds.
Under ideal conditions, Snapdragon germinates in 4 - 7 days and spends 4 - 5 weeks in the seed tray before growing into a proper seedling. Snapdragons can go from the seed tray straight into the bed; there is no need to transplant them into a larger tray or pots. We just recommend hardening off the seedlings so they get used to outdoor conditions and strengthen a bit.
PLANTING Snapdragon seedlings withstand light frosts (- 6 °C), so don't be afraid to plant them even before the last frosts; they can handle it. We plant at a spacing of 15 × 15 cm.
We do not pinch Snapdragons. One seedling will create one proper stem for you and several side stems, so they will branch naturally.
Snapdragons can be grown in tighter spacing (40 - 65 plants per m2, or even 65 - 105 plants per m2), but there we risk fungal diseases appearing. So it is better to give them more space.
GROWING Snapdragons thrive in humous soil; you can incorporate mature compost into the beds before planting. Choose a sunny spot for them.
It is ideal to water Snapdragons at the roots so the leaves stay dry. This prevents various fungal diseases that can plague Snapdragons. Keep regular watering for Snapdragons and don't forget to fertilize regularly. Once Snapdragons start blooming, you can reduce watering.
SUPPORT If you are a professional and grow Snapdragons for cutting, we recommend support, or netting, that the Snapdragons will grow through. Without support, it can happen that stems will be bent and otherwise twisted. For beautifully straight stems, netting is a necessity.
SNAPDRAGON GROUPS Snapdragons are divided into 4 groups; group 1 are the earliest and group 4 late. So you can sow and plant group 1 first, as it will bloom for you even at lower temperatures and shorter days. While group 4 is better left for the end of summer.
In our offer are Snapdragons in these groups:
Group 1 - 2 Maryland, Costa, Snapstar, Frappe
Group 3 - 4 Potomac, Madame Butterfly
The information given is based on our experience, please use it as a guide only. Times may vary depending on the season, climate, location, sowing and transplanting dates and possibly also the conditions in the greenhouse/greenhouse. We always recommend testing how the plant performs in your conditions. Please do not take this as a guarantee.
